Oseco Features Pressure Solutions at ChemInnovations 2010

Opti-Gard pressure relief system available for demonstration at booth #304

Broken Arrow, Okla. (September 15, 2010) – Pressure relief expert Oseco will exhibit its Opti-Gard system at the ChemInnovations 2010 Conference and Expo, October 19-21 in Houston, Texas.  The Opti-Gard pressure relief system, along with Oseco’s full line of rupture discs and explosion vents, will be available for demonstration at Oseco’s booth #304.

Oseco’s will feature the Opti-Gard system at ChemInnovations 2010, booth #304.

Oseco’s will feature the Opti-Gard system at ChemInnovations 2010, booth #304.

The Opti-Gard system protects personnel and equipment from over-pressurization situations.  If internal system pressure reaches a dangerous level, the disc will burst to safely vent the pressure and minimize damage.  Opti-Gard’s Flo-Tel+ sensor then notifies the user that the disc has burst.

Opti-Gard offers the highest performance characteristics available for liquid, gas and vapor applications.  All parts are manufactured from either 316 Stainless Steel or Hastelloy C as standard.  A single disc design ensures that user stock levels are kept to a minimum.

The Opti-Gard’s integral Flo-Tel+ non-invasive detection device is reusable and only requires a one-time installation, unlike traditional gasketed detectors.  Since the Flo-Tel+ is isolated from downstream pressure fluctuations or aggressive media, it will not cause unnecessary downtime through false “failure” indication.

“By leveraging the exceptional performance characteristics of the new Opti-Gard design along with the non-invasive Flot-Tel+ sensor, customers are able to run their processes to the highest levels of productivity without worrying about inaccurate burst detection due to chemical attacks on the sensor membrane,” said Oseco’s VP of Engineering, Mark Holt.

Oseco’s Discs Test Myths on MythBusters

Rupture discs used by TV show to put popular movie myth to the test

Broken Arrow, Okla. (April 1, 2010) – MythBusters has once again turned to rupture disc manufacturer Oseco for help in busting a myth.  This time, the TV show used Oseco’s rupture discs to test the protection that water provides from explosions.

Mythbusters use Oseco rupture disc to test a movie-inspired myth.

MythBusters use Oseco rupture discs to test a movie-inspired myth.

The Discovery Channel’s MythBusters puts myths found in urban legend and movies to the test under real world conditions, to see if they are “Confirmed,” “Plausible” or “Busted.”  In the latest episode entitled “Dive to Survive,” the show’s cast attempted to determine the truth behind a movie-inspired myth that a person can dive beneath water to avoid injury from a nearby explosion.

The show used Oseco rupture discs that were calibrated to burst at 13 psi, which is the force required to cause harm to the human body.  The discs were placed on buoys floating five, 10, 20 and 50 feet from an explosion set on the surface of a lake to measure the force of the resulting shockwave.  Each buoy had three rupture disc rigs set at five feet above water and five and 10 feet below water.  Three increasingly powerful explosions, culminating in the detonation of 50 pounds of TNT, were set off at the planned epicenter and the post-explosion conditions of the discs were recorded.

The MythBusters noted that, even with the most powerful explosion, both underwater discs on the buoy floating 50 feet away from the explosion were intact, while the above water disc on same buoy had ruptured.  The show analyzed these results and determined that water does have a shielding effect, thus classifying this myth as “Plausible.”

Besides its standard range of disc sizes, Oseco offers custom manufacturing such as the specially designed rupture discs used on the show.  Oseco staff was on-site during the shoot to provide engineering expertise and ensure that the equipment was installed and operating properly.

This most recent episode is Oseco’s third appearance on the show. In its MythBusters debut, the company’s bursting discs demonstrated that an underwater explosion would generate enough force to kill a swimmer 75 feet away, proving the end of the movie Deep Blue Sea was impossible in real life.  Oseco’s discs were also used to prove that if exposed to a force that would “knock your socks off,” the person wouldn’t survive the force of impact.

Oseco Features Sanitary Pressure Relief Systems at Interphex, Booth 449

Equipment works in contact with process materials while remaining hygienic

Broken Arrow, Okla. (March 2, 2010) – Leading pressure relief manufacturer Oseco will showcase its sanitary pressure relief systems, including the PRO-S rupture disc and OSS sensor, at Interphex, booth 449.  The show will take place from April 20-22 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City, N.Y.

An Oseco sanitary pressure relief system with the PRO-S rupture disc and OSS sensor, featured at Interphex booth #449.

The PRO-S is a reverse-buckling rupture disc, mounted in contact with the process line.  The disc is precision scored on the vent side to burst in the event of over-pressurization, eliminating injury and equipment damage.  PRO-S is ideal for SIP/ CIP and other applications requiring hygienic conditions and minimal product buildup, since process materials only come in contact with disc’s smooth side.

The Oseco Sanitary Sensor (OSS) is designed to work with all Oseco sanitary rupture discs.  The sensor indicates when a disc has burst using a simple, effective design for reliable performance.

Oseco’s New SRC Rupture Disc Improves Pressurized Railcar Safety

Scored railcar disc won’t leak at high pressures where traditional composite discs fail

Broken Arrow, Okla. (February 16, 2010) – Pressurized rail cars are at constant risk of explosion due to improper or changing pressurization.  Offering an improvement over traditional, failure prone composite discs, Oseco has released the new SRC (scored railcar) rupture disc.  The SRC meets AAR standards and protects against rail car explosions.

Oseco’s SRC disc for pressurized rail cars.

Oseco’s SRC disc for pressurized rail cars.

The SRC is a precision scored disc, which fits standard threaded or bolted railcar safety vents.  The disc will burst and safely equalize pressure if the car’s internal pressure ever builds or drops to a dangerous level, eliminating the danger of explosion.

Composite discs traditionally used by pressurized tank car users and manufacturers utilize a PTFE Teflon sealing membrane, which is susceptible to damage and pinholes that can cause leaks.  Available in Inconel or Stainless Steel for corrosive applications, the SRC disc features a solid metal design that completely eliminates the fragile PTFE seal and locks out damage-causing foreign materials, even when subjected to constant pressure for extended periods.

Flo-Tel+™ Non-Invasive Rupture Detector from Oseco

Practical, cost-effective rupture detection eliminates expensive rewiring costs

Broken Arrow, Okla. (November 4, 2009) – Standard rupture disc sensors require replacement or expensive rewiring after one use, and are often in contact with the process flow, creating possible leak paths. To provide non-invasive and cost-effective burst detection for rupture discs, Oseco offers the Flo-Tel+™ detection system.

Flo-Tel BLOG

The Flo-Tel+ is designed to work with Oseco’s Opti-Gard™ rupture disc, offering a practical solution for rupture disc detection needs. The sensor operates on a simple reed-switch and magnet technology, fitting into the Opti-Gard holder with a magnet poised over the rupture disc. When the disc bursts, the magnet and disc arc away from the sensor, creating an open circuit signal. After rupturing, the disc is the only element that needs to be replaced, eliminating expensive sensor rewiring costs.

Since the sensor is never in contact with the process flow, there are no potential leak paths. Its non-invasive design is unaffected by downstream pressure fluctuations or corrosion.
