New Explosion Vent from Oseco for High Vacuum Operation

MV-RD offers industry-best performance

(June 9, 2011) – Protecting personnel and equipment during deflagrations in high cycling/ high vacuum applications, Oseco offers the new MV-RD explosion vent.  The vent provides extended in-service life, lower burst pressure (pstat) in smaller sizes, and an industry-first two-year warranty.

The MV-RD explosion vent is designed for high cycling applications, such as in dust collectors and bag houses that experience vacuum pressures up to 12 psig/ 24.4 inHg.  The vent mounts on enclosures where dust explosions may occur, and will activate to safely relieve pressure in the event of a deflagration, thereby preventing a large explosion.  The MV-RD can also be used on bulk storage units and in ductwork applications requiring a square explosion vent.

Oseco’s newest vent features a high vacuum rating (-12 psig/24.4 inHg) to help extend the life of the vent in applications where high vacuum pressure exists.  Its lower burst pressures give users the ability to reach required relief area without having to go up in vent size.  Unlike other domed vents, the MV-RD can operate in temperatures up to 450 °F.

The MV-RD meets the requirements of the OSHA Combustible Dust National Emphasis Program and NFPA 68.  It offers industry-best performance tolerances of ± .25 psig and an operating ratio of 80%.  The MV-RD is also the first product in its class to offer a two-year warranty.

Explosion Protection from Oseco at NFPA 2011

Oseco Helps MythBusters Determine “What is Bombproof?”

(April 21, 2011) – Leading rupture disc manufacturer Oseco has helped the cast from the TV show MythBusters test the feasibility of a popular movie myth.  In its fifth appearance for a myth entitled “What is Bombproof?” the show used Oseco’s rupture discs to determine the protection everyday objects offer the human body against an explosion.

The Discovery Channel’s MythBusters puts myths found in urban legend and movies to the test under real world conditions, to see if they are “Confirmed,” “Plausible” or “Busted.”  In the latest episode, the show placed Oseco rupture discs behind wooden tables, cars, dumpsters and brick walls to test how well these objects could shield the discs, and thereby a human from a blast.  The myth comes from a common movie scene, where characters dive behind everyday objects and are protected from a nearby explosion.

The MythBusters cast used discs calibrated to burst at 13psi and 75psi, which are the amounts of force the human body can endure before experiencing injury and certain death.  First, discs were placed at intervals around a charge of 3lbs of C4 plastic explosive to establish injury and death zones at 20 and 10 feet from the epicenter without protection.

Having control data, the cast then tested wooden tables, cars, metal dumpsters and brick walls.  Each object was placed at 10 and 20 feet from a 3lbs charge of C4, with an Oseco rupture disc shielded behind the object. In a surprising conclusion, the cast confirmed that all objects prevented the blasts’ shockwaves from causing injury at 20 feet and death at 10 feet.  The most effective barrier, the brick wall, was able to protect against both death and injury at 10 feet.  However, the MythBusters did note that their experiments did not take the damage caused by flying shrapnel into consideration.

In the past, the MythBusters cast has turned to Oseco when they needed help measuring the destructive effects of explosions.  In previous episodes, Oseco’s discs were used to determine the protection water provides from explosions, and to test whether a person could be exposed to a blast that would “knock your socks off” without experiencing a deadly amount of force.

Oseco Featured on Mythbusters Wednesday Night

Broken Arrow, Okla. (April 18, 2010) – Pressure relief specialist Oseco will be making its fifth appearance on the TV show Mythbusters. The episode, entitled “Running on Water,” airs this Wednesday night at 8 CDT on the Discovery Channel.

Mythbusters puts movie stunts and urban myths to the test in real world conditions, to see if they are “Confirmed”, “Plausible” or “Busted.”  In the past, the show has turned to Oseco’s rupture discs whenever they needed help measuring the force generated from an explosion.  In Oseco’s next appearance, its discs will be used in a segment called “What is Bombproof?” to determine the protection that everyday barriers, such as cars and concrete walls, offer to the human body against explosions.

Sanitary Pressure Relief Systems from Oseco at Interphex

The PRO-S utilizes a reverse-buckling rupture disc, engineered so that its smooth side faces the product flow to minimize product buildup and blockage.  The disc is precision scored on the vent side to burst in the event of over-pressurization, avoiding injury and equipment damage.  The PRO-S disc requires no special liners or coatings, and operates smoothly in hygienic-controlled, FDA-sensitive environments at up to 90% of its burst pressure.  The disc features burst pressures as low as 16 psig, making it ideal for pharmaceutical and biochemical manufacturing applications. 

The PRO-S system includes the Oseco Sanitary Sensor (OSS), which alerts the user when a disc has ruptured.  Using a simple, effective method of detecting when a disc has burst, the OSS can be used to activate a variety of alarms, including computer controlled systems.

Oseco Graphite Rupture Discs for Highly Corrosive Processes

No holder required for installation, ASME UD stamps available

(January 28, 2011) – For use in highly corrosive gas and liquid processes, pressure relief expert Oseco has developed a new line of graphite rupture discs.  The GraphiTech line is available in three configurations, including the GraphiTech Monoblock (GTM), the GraphiTech Monoblock with Vacuum Support (GTMV) and the GraphiTech Inverted (GTI).

GraphiTech discs are all constructed using corrosive resistant, resin-impregnated graphite, and include non-asbestos inlet and outlet gaskets.  The GTM is available for general applications that require a rupture disc to withstand corrosive chemicals, such as processes involving sulfuric or hydrochloric acid, ultrapure water and phosgene.  The GTMV is designed for the same corrosive processes that need vacuum protection, which can be required on any ASME vessel.  The GTI’s inverted disc is engineered for jobs requiring a high burst pressure, and also provides additional corrosive protection with its available Teflon liner.

GraphiTech discs’ flat design allows them to fit securely in between piping flanges with no holders required for installation.  With a 0% manufacturing range and 90% operating ratio, discs are stamped at their requested burst pressure and temperature.  All models are available in sizes from 1” through 24”, with ASME UD stamps available.

Oseco Announces New Vice President of Sales, Darren Doyle

Doyle joins Oseco after 17 years with Hilti GB Ltd. (Manchester, UK) and Hilti North America Inc. (Tulsa, Okla.), a supplier of construction tools and fasteners, where he was most recently Vice President of Trade Marketing responsible for driving the voice of the customer into the organization.  He has a Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Central Lancashire (Lancashire, UK).

(September 15, 2010) – Pressure relief expert Oseco will exhibit its Opti-Gard system at the ChemInnovations 2010 Conference and Expo, October 19-21 in Houston, Texas.  The Opti-Gard pressure relief system, along with Oseco’s full line of rupture discs and explosion vents, will be available for demonstration at Oseco’s booth #304.

The Opti-Gard system protects personnel and equipment from over-pressurization situations.  If internal system pressure reaches a dangerous level, the disc will burst to safely vent the pressure and minimize damage.  Opti-Gard’s Flo-Tel+ sensor then notifies the user that the disc has burst.

Opti-Gard offers the highest performance characteristics available for liquid, gas and vapor applications.  All parts are manufactured from either 316 Stainless Steel or Hastelloy C as standard.  A single disc design ensures that user stock levels are kept to a minimum.

The Opti-Gard’s integral Flo-Tel+ non-invasive detection device is reusable and only requires a one-time installation, unlike traditional gasketed detectors.  Since the Flo-Tel+ is isolated from downstream pressure fluctuations or aggressive media, it will not cause unnecessary downtime through false “failure” indication.

Three Day Lead Time With Oseco’s Explosion Vent Stocking Program

(June 2, 2010) – Featuring industry-best lead times and significant cost savings, intelligent pressure relief specialist Oseco has introduced its new Explosion Vent Stocking Program.  The program features Oseco’s most widely used explosion vents with a lead time of only three days.

The new Explosion Vent Stocking Program provides a range of vents for numerous applications.  Vents available through the program include Oseco’s MV (Metal Vent), MV-S (Sanitary Metal Vent), CRVC (Composite Vent) and RNDCC (Round Crowned Vent).

The MV’s all metal design uses a stainless steel controlling membrane with no visible holes or slits, making it ideal for use where product build-up may be a concern.  For sanitary applications, the MV-S is FDA approved.  The CRVC domed vent is excellent for use in high cycling applications.  The RNDCC is a damage resistant panel for use with round ductwork, capable of withstanding full vacuum without the need for frame support bars.

All vents are provided with gaskets on the inlet side, and meet the requirements of NFPA 68 and the OSHA Combustible Dust National Emphasis Program.  Optional burst detection systems and installation frames are available.
