Sensorex has expanded its family of water quality and online process transmitters, adding four new models to provide basic monitoring and control. The TX10 pH/ORP and CX10 Conductivity and transmitters offer simple monitoring, while the TX20 pH/ORP and CX20 Conductivity controllers can also be programmed for process control. These small-footprint panel-mount transmitters provide reliable data and control of process fluids, in a cost-effective package. Applications include water quality, chemical, electronics, food production, environmental and wastewater treatment.

The TX10 measures pH or ORP and temperature. The CX10 transmitter measures conductivity, resistivity, and temperature. Both provide convenient local display of values and easy access to calibrate online process sensors. The primary measurement 4-20mA signal output can be integrated into a range of process control systems.

The TX20 monitors pH or ORP, with temperature compensation for accurate measurement and control. The CX20 monitors conductivity or resistivity, also with temperature compensation. Both provide local display of values with relay output for alarm or control of process conditions ideal for use with chemical feed systems.

All four models are simple to operate, with push button interface and clear LCD displays. They are designed to save panel space with a small footprint 1/8 DIN enclosure. The devices are 100-240 VAC line-powered.

Sensorex’s new SD7000 Series Differential pH/ORP sensors provide industrial and municipal water treatment operators with a unique, yet proven sensor technology, with overall low cost of ownership. SD7000 Series sensors are highly accurate, with three electrodes instead of the two found in conventional combination pH and ORP sensors. Solution pH is measured differentially with process and inner reference (surrounded by a known concentrated pH 7 buffer) electrodes, compared to a third ground electrode. This provides optimal measurement accuracy, minimizes reference junction potential, and eliminates sensor ground loop effects. Less maintenance for operators, minimized down time, longer sensor life and overall greater reliability are hallmarks of this differential sensor design.

SD7000 Series sensors offer unmatched accuracy and reliability with an encapsulated preamp to eliminate moisture problems and allow for mounting up to 3000 feet from installed pH/ORP transmitters and remote monitoring systems. Their 1.5” NPT convertible threads are provided for sensor mounting into flow tees or adapting to a pipe for process submersion. The Ryton sensor body provides outstanding chemical resistance and the double-junction reference resists contamination to ensure measurement stability.

The internal reference electrode is electrically connected to the process solution by means of a field-replaceable double junction salt bridge which reduces the possibility of contamination. The salt bridge and standard pH 7 cell solution can be replaced periodically at a very low cost, making the SD7000 differential sensor very economical to maintain.

Sensorex High-Temperature, High-Pressure Conductivity Sensor for Boilers

CS875 Series withstands extreme conditions

Sensorex’s new in-line high-temperature and high-pressure CS875 conductivity sensor has been designed especially for use in industrial boilers. This rugged sensor provides accurate, repeatable conductivity measurements at saturated steam conditions up to 600 psig (41.4 bar) and temperatures up to 486°F (252°C) without cooling the process sample.

The sensor enables continuous automatic blowdown control, minimizing corrosion and scaling. By optimising the blowdown in higher pressure boiler systems, operational cost, energy consumption and treatment chemical use can be minimized. The CS875 sensor is designed for use with most makes and models of conductivity transmitters or controllers.

Sensors have 3/4″ male NPT mounting threads with a 1” insertion depth for easy installation. Both the body and the measuring pin are constructed of 316 stainless steel. A special thermally resistant PEEK insert and high temperature Perfluoroelastomer O-rings ensure reliability at extreme boiler temperatures. Two models are available to suit application requirements – the CS875HT, and the CS875HTTC with ATC temperature element.

All Sensorex probes are supplied with 6″ PTFE coated leads as standard for integral mounting to a forged steel junction box/conduit assembly. Longer cable lengths are also available at additional cost.

Sensorex S270 Series pH sensors provide accurate pH measurement in plant water/wastewater treatment, chemical, food production, and other process environments. Downhole Corrosion Monitoring System from Cosasco® at DUG Eagle Ford

Only tool capable of providing corrosion rates from inside downhole tubing

Corrosion monitoring expert Cosasco will display its Downhole Corrosion Monitoring System (DCMS™) at the DUG Eagle Ford exhibition, booth 2030. The show takes place October 25-27 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center (San Antonio, Texas).

Production wells typically contain water, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, which combine with varying temperatures in downhole tubing to create an extremely corrosive environment. The DCMS is a tubular electronic instrument that uses a Cosasco electrical resistance probe to determine the rate of metal loss within the downhole tubing. It is the only tool on the market that provides corrosion rate data from within hostile downhole environments to test the efficacy of corrosion inhibitor treatments and ensure safe, environmentally friendly, economical operation.

The DCMS is constructed from highly corrosion resistant 17-4 PH stainless steel, and designed to withstand temperatures up to 302°F (150°C) and pressures up to 10,000 psi. It has a battery life of 90 days with measurement settings at two hour intervals, allowing for enough time to accurately evaluate corrosion inhibitor effectiveness.

Malaysian Soft Drink Manufacturer uses Hanovia UV to Remove Bacteria from Process Water

UV disinfection system installed after dechlorination unit

F&N Beverages Manufacturing Sdn Bhd in Malaysia has installed a Hanovia UV disinfection system at its state-of-the-art manufacturing plant in Inanam, Kota Kinabalu. The Hanovia UV system is installed after an activated carbon dechlorination unit and is used to eliminate bacteria from water used in the soft drinks manufacturing process.

F&N is Malaysia’s largest soft drinks manufacturer, producing many of the country’s most well-known brands, including 100PLUS, F&N Fruit Tea and F&N SEASONS. The company’s brand promise is ‘Pure Enjoyment, Pure Goodness’, so quality is uppermost in all its manufacturing processes.

UV technology is required for this application to fulfil local QA/QC (quality assurance/quality control) requirements. Hanovia was selected as the UV system supplier due to the company’s reputation in the beverage industry and the fact that its UV systems are optimised for process water applications such as those found in beverage manufacturing. Added benefits for the customer included low operating and maintenance costs.

The benefits of UV

Meeting the increasingly rigorous hygiene standards required in the beverage industries is a real challenge. If improvements need to be made to plant and equipment, they need to bring quick returns on the investment and measurable improvements in product quality.

For manufacturers seeking to improve the quality of the end product, UV is an economic, realistic option. It is an established method of disinfecting drinking water throughout the world, and is also widely used for high purity applications such as pharmaceutical processing and microchip manufacturing, where water of the highest quality is essential.

There are no microorganisms known to be resistant to UV – this includes pathogenic bacteria such as Listeria, Legionella and Cryptosporidium (and its spores, which are resistant to chlorination).

UV disinfection systems are also easy to install, with minimum disruption to the plant. They need very little maintenance, the only requirement being replacement of the UV lamps every 9 – 12 months, depending on use. This is a simple operation that takes only a few minutes and can be carried out by general maintenance staff.

The current continuous emission monitoring system (CEMS) industry in developing nations including India is evolving to meet the need for more accurate, continuous, and reliable monitoring of power plant and industrial smoke stack exhaust. Gas sample conditioning systems are a critical component to insure accurate measurements of pollutants using extractive CEMS and are gaining increased attention from the industry as approaches are developed to meet higher standards for air quality. Sample conditioning is one of the most important factors for insuring correct measurements because the analyser equipment results can only be as good as the sample it measures. Moisture content must be removed from the sample prior to reaching the analyser to enable an accurate measurement and to protect the life of the analyser equipment. Traditionally, condensing technology for removal of moisture from extracted sample gas has been used, mainly due to its low initial cost. However, condensing systems face several persistent problems due to the need for dust removal, inability to handle high moisture levels, and reduced performance at high ambient temperatures, resulting in a high maintenance load, high failure rate, and inaccurate measurement due to moisture interference inside the analyzer. Perma Pure’s gas conditioning systems using Nafion technology for moisture removal reduces overall maintenance costs, reduces equipment failure rates, and provides for more accurate measurements of low-level pollutants compared to condensing systems.

The publication presented by Perma Pure at the 2015 Petroleum and Power Automation Meet highlighted the suitability of Nafion-based sample conditioning systems for low-level pollutant gas measurement with extractive CEMS. Next generation power and industrial plants employ Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) to reduce flue gas SOx and NOx content, respectively, by more than 90%. In order to monitor and confirm the reduction of harmful emissions at these lower levels, measured in parts-per-million, analysers must be able to measure the SOx and NOx pollutants in concentrations less than 50 ppm. In the extractive cooler-based sample conditioning system, a significant percentage of analytes are lost due to their solubility in the small quantities of liquid water always present in such systems. This may render them unsuitable for very low-level measurement of soluble analytes such as NOx and SOx. Nafion-based dryers remove moisture in the vapor phase, thus reducing the loss of soluble analytes as no liquid water is normally present in these systems. In this paper, real world experience with Nafion-based sample conditioning systems is presented that demonstrates their ability to preserve the analyte levels in emissions and process monitoring gas samples and allow highly accurate results over a long service life. This experience provides power plants and refineries the confidence to deploy superior systems that both improve measurement accuracy and analyzer reliability (by preventing liquid water from entering the analyser).

Conclusion

Perma Pure launches new Nafion dryer for aerosol research and measurement

The MD-700 large diameter dryer was specifically developed for humidity control in particle measurement and aerosol analysis applications, but can be used in a wide range of drying or humidifying applications.
