New Mass Flow Controller from Alicat Performs at High Volumes

Design overcomes limits of high flow rates to maximize speed and accuracy

Alicat Scientific has engineered a new mass flow controller with its highest top flow rate suitable to a wider range of applications. The MCRH can accommodate flow rates of up to 5000 slpm, without compromising speed or precision of gas control. The highly stable controller manages industrial processes with more chaotic upstream fluctuations, such as control of industrial combustion gases, or mass flow into food and packaging processes.

The MCRH 5000 slpm precisely and rapidly controls mass flow rate, volumetric flow rate, or back pressure of gases in high flow processes. To overcome the poor turndown ratio and slow response of existing methods (such as interlinking a meter with an external valve) Alicat designed a new flow geometry. This new design accommodates the higher flow rates, with a low pressure drop of 14.1 psig at full scale. A dual valve design enables a fast 100 millisecond control response time without significantly raising instrument power requirements.

The instrument’s Gas Select firmware includes a library of up to 130 preloaded gases, user selectable in the field. The MCRH 5000 slpm can be programmed with the instrument’s push button menus and onboard display, or via remote connection. Digital communications options include RS-232 or RS-485 serial, Modbus, or PROFIBUS, as well as analog 0-5 Vdc, 1-5 Vdc, and 0-10 Vdc, or 4-20 mA.

Sensorex High-Temperature, High-Pressure Conductivity Sensor for Boilers

CS875 Series withstands extreme conditions

Sensorex’s new in-line high-temperature and high-pressure CS875 conductivity sensor has been designed especially for use in industrial boilers. This rugged sensor provides accurate, repeatable conductivity measurements at saturated steam conditions up to 600 psig (41.4 bar) and temperatures up to 486°F (252°C) without cooling the process sample.

The sensor enables continuous automatic blowdown control, minimizing corrosion and scaling. By optimising the blowdown in higher pressure boiler systems, operational cost, energy consumption and treatment chemical use can be minimized. The CS875 sensor is designed for use with most makes and models of conductivity transmitters or controllers.

Sensors have 3/4″ male NPT mounting threads with a 1” insertion depth for easy installation. Both the body and the measuring pin are constructed of 316 stainless steel. A special thermally resistant PEEK insert and high temperature Perfluoroelastomer O-rings ensure reliability at extreme boiler temperatures. Two models are available to suit application requirements – the CS875HT, and the CS875HTTC with ATC temperature element.

All Sensorex probes are supplied with 6″ PTFE coated leads as standard for integral mounting to a forged steel junction box/conduit assembly. Longer cable lengths are also available at additional cost.

Downhole Corrosion Monitoring System from Cosasco® at DUG Eagle Ford

Only tool capable of providing corrosion rates from inside downhole tubing

Corrosion monitoring expert Cosasco will display its Downhole Corrosion Monitoring System (DCMS™) at the DUG Eagle Ford exhibition, booth 2030. The show takes place October 25-27 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center (San Antonio, Texas).

Production wells typically contain water, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, which combine with varying temperatures in downhole tubing to create an extremely corrosive environment. The DCMS is a tubular electronic instrument that uses a Cosasco electrical resistance probe to determine the rate of metal loss within the downhole tubing. It is the only tool on the market that provides corrosion rate data from within hostile downhole environments to test the efficacy of corrosion inhibitor treatments and ensure safe, environmentally friendly, economical operation.

The DCMS is constructed from highly corrosion resistant 17-4 PH stainless steel, and designed to withstand temperatures up to 302°F (150°C) and pressures up to 10,000 psi. It has a battery life of 90 days with measurement settings at two hour intervals, allowing for enough time to accurately evaluate corrosion inhibitor effectiveness.

The new Model 4020LT-A two-wire transmitter from Cosasco provides enhanced resolution measurements of metal loss due to corrosion inside pipelines. Smart+ Combines Mechanical Interlocks with Process Safety Sensors

SmartTrap+ ensures process vessels and pipework are safe to open

In the process industry, mechanical interlocks guarantee strict adherence to procedures and help avoid human error. They are particularly useful for highly dangerous operations such as pigging and valve changeover procedures.

While interlocks ensure extremely high safety levels, they usually function as stand-alone safety systems. New digital technologies are now emerging that enable traditional interlocking to be combined with digital process control and instrumentation systems.

Smith Flow Control is the first company to combine these mutually beneficial technologies in the development of the SmartTrap+, which incorporates signals from sensors into the interlocking sequence.

During a pigging operation certain safety conditions need to be met: the vessel pressure should be at a safe level and all dangerous gases and residue must be removed before opening the pig door. Mechanical interlocking guarantees that all required valve operations are performed, but cannot guarantee the outcomes of these operations.

For example, opening and closing a vent valve does not give real time information that the vessel pressure has actually reached a safe level; while opening and closing a drain valve does not guarantee that all residue has been removed.

By incorporating signals from other field devices like pressure or H2S/CO2 sensors into the interlocking sequence, the SmartTrap+ ensures interlock keys can only be released if particular process conditions have been met. So, for example, this could mean that the key for opening the vessel closure door will only be released when the pressure inside the vessel is acceptable and no dangerous gases or residue are detected.

SmartTrap+ incorporates permissive signals and a door lock proximity switch (4-20mA) as standard. The signals can include (but are not limited to) pressure detection, gas detection, flow/ level and pig detection.

Some of the factors contributing to pipeline pigging incidents include:
• Lack of training or complacency
• Lack of hazard awareness
• False sense of security and reliance only on pressure gauges

SmartTrap+ effectively deals with these factors, making pigging a safer operation and grants full traceability in real time.

The process industry’s standard preventive actions include:
• Hazard identification and risk assessment including management of changes
• Awareness, training and competencies of personnel
• Procedures that address normal and upset conditions

SmartTrap+ reinforces these actions and implements genuine physical control on any pigging operation.
