Ocean Optics Enhances Capabilities of NIRQuest Series Spectrometers

New replaceable slit design and internal shutter option

Ocean Optics has enhanced the NIRQuest series of small-footprint near-infrared spectrometers. All NIRQuest spectrometer models now come with a replaceable slit design as standard, increasing measurement flexibility with easy user changes in the field. Additionally, the option of adding an internal shutter is now available to more effectively manage light throughput and dark measurements in experiment setups.

The NIRQuest is a robust, reliable spectrometer with a fast response time and good optical resolution over 900-2500 nm to suit applications from moisture detection and chemical analysis to high-resolution laser and optical fiber characterization. Slit size is one of the determining factors in the optical resolution of a spectrometer. The choice inevitably involves design trade-offs: A larger slit increases throughput, but at the expense of optical resolution. A smaller slit yields higher optical resolution, but decreases throughput. The flexibility to adjust the width of the slit helps eliminate these trade-offs by granting users the ability to adapt spectrometer performance in the field, without need for recalibration.

Shutter type is another mechanism to configure a spectrometer for maximum performance in a given application. The NIRQuest’s new internal shutter option is useful for applications where placing an external shutter is difficult, such as emissive setups and probe-based measurements. Internal shutters are also more convenient for applications where light intensities change, requiring users to dynamically adjust integration times and renormalize the spectrometer. The internal shutter improves signal throughput in the setup and allows for shorter integration times for an equivalent level of signal. Operation via software makes shutter control as simple as a few keystrokes, with no extra components or cabling to contend with.

The NIRQuest series includes several models of preconfigured spectrometers, each optimized for optimum response within a specific wavelength range. A custom model is also available, for users who want to select the ideal combination of optical bench components, including gratings, slits and filters for a particular application. External hardware triggering functions allow users to capture data when an external event occurs, or to trigger an event after data acquisition.

Economical S270 Series offers customized options for use in water and industrial applications

Sensorex S270 Series pH sensors provide accurate pH measurement in plant water/wastewater treatment, chemical, food production, and other process environments. Economical and easy-to-clean, the pH sensors are compatible with virtually all commercially available transmitters and controllers, including the Sensorex TX100, 2000 or 3000 pH/ORP Transmitter family. The durable S270 Series sensors are available in a range of configurations to meet the needs of both industrial and municipal end users.

S270 sensors are a cost-effective choice for wastewater discharge monitoring in both municipal and industrial wastewater treatment settings, as well as other online water quality and process applications. Either spherical (S271CD) or flat (S272CD) pH measurement surfaces are available, providing accurate measurement over a range of 0-14 pH. For long service life with low maintenance, S270 sensors are constructed with highly chemical- resistant Ryton sensor bodies and use Sensorex’s proprietary polymer sensor reference gel.

With integral ¾” NPT threads, the sensors can be installed in-line in any standard 3/4” flow through pipe tee, or submerged directly in a process tank. Sensors have a temperature range up to 100°C and pressure rating of 0-100 psig. Custom options include specialized cable lengths, connectors and Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC). HWM develops data logger range for gas industry

New Intelligens suitable for network monitoring and AMR

HWM has launched an intrinsically-safe range of data loggers suitable for the gas industry, after 30 years developing monitoring, telemetry and data logging solutions for the water market. The new Intelligens range will offer a number of variants suitable for gas network monitoring and automatic meter reading.

The new data logger is certified to ATEX Zone 0 and suitable for applications including gas network pressure surveys, governor / regulator station monitoring and extremity point monitoring. Thanks to multi-input functionality, the Intelligens unit can be supplied with multiple digital pressure inputs, in addition to temperature, flow and state recording. Data is transmitted via GPRS with an option for SMS backup. A 3G modem variant is also available.

The unit’s telemetry options, robust construction and five-year battery life make it particularly suited to applications requiring an accurate and reliable monitoring system on sites which are remote, hard to access or visited irregularly. Advanced features such as digital pressure transducers ensure long-term stability with negligible drift.

The logger’s two-way connectivity allows for remote programming and advanced interrogation, avoiding the need for unscheduled and expensive site visits. An advanced alarm template can be uploaded to enable an alert to be sent to multiple recipients. When an alarm event occurs the unit’s accelerated sampling frequency and data transmission options allow the user to monitor and respond to changing conditions with much greater confidence.
The low-power electronics ensure a five-year battery life, even after increased data transmission rates during alarm conditions are factored in. The internal battery can be supplemented with solar power or external battery packs.

Downhole Corrosion Monitoring System from Cosasco® at DUG Eagle Ford

Only tool capable of providing corrosion rates from inside downhole tubing

Corrosion monitoring expert Cosasco will display its Downhole Corrosion Monitoring System (DCMS™) at the DUG Eagle Ford exhibition, booth 2030. The show takes place October 25-27 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center (San Antonio, Texas).

Production wells typically contain water, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, which combine with varying temperatures in downhole tubing to create an extremely corrosive environment. The DCMS is a tubular electronic instrument that uses a Cosasco electrical resistance probe to determine the rate of metal loss within the downhole tubing. It is the only tool on the market that provides corrosion rate data from within hostile downhole environments to test the efficacy of corrosion inhibitor treatments and ensure safe, environmentally friendly, economical operation.

The DCMS is constructed from highly corrosion resistant 17-4 PH stainless steel, and designed to withstand temperatures up to 302°F (150°C) and pressures up to 10,000 psi. It has a battery life of 90 days with measurement settings at two hour intervals, allowing for enough time to accurately evaluate corrosion inhibitor effectiveness.

Science and Creativity Come Together with Spectroscopy and Pyrotechnics

Ocean Optics’ spectrometer assures special effects colour purity and safety for Le Maitre

Spectrometers from Ocean Optics are being used by Le Maitre Ltd in Surrey to ensure the quality and safety of its close proximity pyrotechnics. Ocean Optics spectrometers measure plasma emission and emissive colour of effects used in theatre productions, concerts, and sporting events. The measurements help Le Maitre ensure these explosive displays are consistently amazing and, most important, safe.

Le Maitre Pyrotechnics Developer Hamish Cavaye, Ph.D., runs live product tests in a silo in rural England. His challenge is to objectively verify that effects are producing the desired colours. As was recently proven with the pop culture “What colour is the dress?” phenomenon, the human eye is easily fooled. Using a spectrometer to verify colour purity, Cavaye looks for particular emission bands indicative of a specific chemical composition.

Measuring the emissive colour of pyrotechnics with a spectrometer also has the ability to signal safety issues. If the spectra identify elements that are not expected, it may indicate contamination. Verifying consistency not only ensures a pleasing colour for the audience but helps assure the safety of patrons and performers.

Measurement speed is also important in testing pyrotechnics, as some effects can last less than a second. With integration times on some Ocean Optics spectrometers as low as 1 ms, Cavaye can easily capture multiple spectra for each effect. Along with needing the precision and accuracy typically required of spectrometer measurements, Le Maitre had the additional challenge of requiring an instrument that was portable and durable. Compact miniature spectrometers can easily be brought to the testing silo and are rugged enough to withstand close proximity to live effects as they are firing.

Cost-Effective Pool and Spa Water Quality Monitoring by replacement with pH/ORP Sensors

HWM launches GPRS Pressure Transient Logger that remotely monitors for water hammer

New unit offers cost-effective data transmission and prolonged battery life

HWM has added GPRS data transmission to its pressure transient logging capability. The new GPRS Pressure Transient Logger triggers a capture window around a transient event and transmits this data, keeping costs down and prolonging battery life.

The ‘event window selection’ feature allows operators to send transient alarm information and a selectable window of fast logged data before and after the event. Network transient monitoring is now feasible via remote telemetry rather than manual site surveys. As transients are immediately identified, swift remedial action can be taken to avoid burst and infrastructure damage.

Specifically designed to combat water hammer, the data logger features sampling rates up to 100 times per second to effectively monitor for damaging pressure spikes, which may only last a fraction of a second. Addressing these brief moments of extreme pressure is a major factor in reducing burst water mains. Now that data is immediately available through remote telemetry, swift remedial action can be taken to avoid infrastructure damage.

The sampling rate on the logger’s pressure transient channel extends to 100 times a second and operators can define sampling intervals and transient data capture trigger levels. With the optional addition of flow channels, the unit is able to provide comprehensive transient and general network monitoring.

Supplied in an IP68-rated case, the logger is designed for long-term field deployment. Its 4GB flash memory (SD card) offers storage for up to eight billion readings. Typical battery life is two years with internal batteries at a sampling rate of 25 Hz, one data connection per day and typical event window dial-ins. External HWM battery packs can be added to support more frequent sampling or dial-in rates, or to extend life between battery changes.

PerfectSync automatically synchronizes audio, voice and strobe signals across Advanced’s Axis AX fire alarm networks dynamically, as conditions change. Synchronization of audio and visual signals across multiple notification zones, floors & areas, prevents confusion in an emergency situation and aids in meeting intelligibility standards.

PerfectSync uses high performance, distributed, digital amplifiers that come standard with an integral backup amplifier and power source, while supporting up to 16 messages.
