STS spectrometers measure vegetation from the ground and the air

A pair of super-lightweight miniature spectrometers from Ocean Optics is helping researchers investigate plant parameters in a verdant patch of New Zealand grassland. The compact STS model spectrometers, one deployed as a ground unit and the other aboard an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), are making synchronised hyperspectral measurements of barley and sugar beet crops to assess plant characteristics for more effective crop management.

A multinational team of researchers from Germany, Italy, Spain and New Zealand developed the UAV-based system and conducted the initial experiments, gathering high-resolution reflectance spectra from the UAV at altitudes of up to 200 meters and irradiance spectra from the ground-based spectrometer. According to team leader Andreas Burkart of the Research Center Jülich IBG-2 Plant Sciences, Germany, collection of hyperspectral data by field spectroscopy is a time-consuming task and often is restricted to easily accessible areas.

The small size and weight of the STS spectrometer is ideal for use on the UAV, which allows a series of fast and reproducible measurements over any terrain, even forest or marsh. By measuring various segments across a section of the New Zealand pastureland, the system was able to assess information such as specific plots that contained live vegetation.

The STS is a remarkably small CMOS detector-based spectrometer that is less than 2 inches square (40 mm x 42 mm) and weighs a little over 2 ounces (68 g). It performs comparably to larger systems, providing full spectral analysis with low stray light, high signal to noise (>1500:1) and excellent optical resolution. For the application described here, the researchers were able to match the performance of the STS to that of a larger, more expensive commercially available field portable spectrometer, with optical resolution of ~2.5 nm (FWHM).

The design provides more accuracy than products using conventional UV lamps and sensors. A UV-LED light source allows instant activation and highly efficient, mercury-free operation. The PearlSense T254 is capable of battery and solar-powered operation, and can be used in a variety of configurations including handheld operation, installed directly in a pipe or bracket-mounted in an open channel environment. The monitor can withstand unlimited cycling without lamp degradation.

UVT is used to track changes in water quality, and can also be used to alert to the presence of organic compounds and other issues. UVT values are communicated to the control system of a UV reactor and used in calculating the most efficient treatment process. From large municipal water treatment facilities to small food and beverage applications, consistently accurate UVT values can save energy and ultimately provide superior water quality. Currently available in XP95, Discovery and Waterproof variants, the new call points feature a convenient re-settable element for quick and easy testing: a single ergonomically-designed tool is used for both the test and reset procedures. Installation is further eased with front-facing addressing, meaning there is no need to detach it from the backbox which is supplied as standard for simple surface mounting.

The products are also loop-powered and feature ‘E-Z fit’ connectors to reduce and speed up wiring requirements, and have a continuity link to allow system wiring and testing prior to call point connection.

Customers can choose whether to have an isolator included with the manual call points, which would eliminate the need for additional, separate isolation devices; isolator versions are also EN54-17 compliant. A two-colour LED on the front clearly displays ‘normal’ or ‘fault’ status for each device, and the highly visible alarm indicator can be seen from up to 10 metres away. The new call points are fully backwards compatible and can be retro-fit, and can also be supplied with an optional transparent cover to prevent accidental operation.

Further variants of Apollo’s new Manual Call Points will be made available in the future, including: AlarmSense, Conventional, Intrinsically Safe, Marine, SIL and Coloured variants. Apollo has also created videos to demonstrate and aid installation of the products, which can be viewed on the company’s website or YouTube channel.

The looms, which are pre-wired into the Memcom terminal block, allow the lift’s existing pictograms and alarm push buttons to be used and provide labelled wires to connect to these components.

Some of the looms also contain relays, removing the need to source and install relays to switch pictograms. In these cases, the loom is simply plugged into the Memcom and wired into the lift as detailed on the wiring labels.

The latest version of Memcom features a new interface in which programming relies on a tick-box system and drop-down menus rather than code-based prefixes and suffixes, making programming the unit a simpler and more intuitive process. This makes Memcom the first emergency telephone on the market that can be programmed without codes or a programming tool.
