Labsphere has received accreditation for its Spectralon® Diffuse Reflectance Standards and Targets as an NVLAP ISO 17025 calibration laboratory. Previously, Labsphere earned accreditation as an NVLAP Lab 200951-0 for calibrated Spectral Flux Lamp Standards and Calibrated Forward Spectral Flux Standards. All were the result of rigorous on-site assessments and technical evaluations of the company’s engineering, manufacturing and calibration departments. The National Institute of Standards and Technology governs the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP).

Spectralon Standards and Targets offer the highest diffuse reflectance values of any known substance and are available in grey, white and various colours. Durable, chemically inert Spectralon is spectrally flat over the UV-VIS-NIR spectrum. It is optically flat to +/- 4 percent over the range of 250 – 2500 nm and +/- 1 percent over the photopic region of the spectrum. Spectralon Diffuse Reflectance Standards and Targets are the most Lambertian reflectors available for use over the wavelength range from 250 – 2500 nm.

NVLAP accreditation signifies that Labsphere operates in accordance with stringent guidelines pertaining to quality systems, engineering expertise, technical personnel, test and calibration methods, laboratory equipment and environment, measurement traceability, handling of test and calibration items and accuracy in test and calibration reports.

Compact model now available for tight spaces where other flameproof panels may not fit

Crowcon’s new Vortex FP Compact control panel increases the flexibility of its flameproof product range. Like the existing Vortex FP, the FP Compact is specifically designed to monitor toxic and flammable gas detectors or fire detectors where there is a need for the control system to be installed in Atex Zone 1 and 2 hazardous areas. Its more compact size, however, means it is particularly suited to confined spaces such as analyser shelters in refineries, offshore rigs or FPSO (floating production, storage and offloading) installations.

All day-to-day operations on either model can be performed without having to open the panel’s enclosure: gas levels, alarms and faults are viewed at a glance through a window and all system functions are accessed either via buttons or a ‘Crowmag’ magnetic key (supplied). This means the whole system can be checked at a glance without a ‘hot work’ permit being required, which in turn means adjacent areas can remain online, saving time and money.

The standard Vortex FP contains up to 24 relays and can monitor up to 12 gas/fire detectors, while the FP Compact contains up to 16 relays and can also monitor up to 12 detectors. Rated IP66 for dust and water ingress, both models meet all the latest gas detection legislation and EMC standards and is validated to the IEC 61508 (SIL 1) functional safety standard.

The control panel is also highly configurable: it can be factory-set according to end-user requirements or altered at any time by a PC using the software provided. Adjustments can also be made in-situ without the need for additional equipment.

All relays are monitored continuously, ensuring the integrity of the entire control system. Modbus capability also allows two-wire linkage between the panel and the control room, saving on a potentially large number of costly cable linkages.

In areas where explosive or toxic gases are a real and imminent danger, both the Vortex FP and the Vortex FP Compact allow workers to perform their jobs more efficiently without compromising their safety.

The two-way communication feature enables customers to update and upgrade their dataloggers remotely. This removes the requirement for expensive and time consuming site visits, and effectively makes the loggers “future proof” by ensuring that customers receive the immediate benefit of any new functionality.

In addition to remote upgrading, users can now reprogram the settings on their HWM loggers from any internet enabled device, again removing the need to physically extract the logger from the ground to do so. Alarm trigger points and reporting intervals can now be changed from the comfort of the home or office, which enables the user to always have the most appropriate settings without spending time or money visiting the installation.

HWM has also introduced an innovative accelerated dial-in feature that responds to an alarm condition. When an alarm is triggered, the logger automatically begins to transmit data more frequently to enable a more detailed analysis of the situation. Alerts can be sent to up 16 specified telephone numbers, which enables prompt and effective action to be taken. This intelligent alarm response can be particularly useful when, for example, the logger is connected to a SonicSens ultrasonic level measurement device over an open channel or sewer overflow. As levels rise above the alarm threshold, the increased data transmission rate will assist the response team in monitoring the rate of increase and potential flood risk during the incident. When the level falls below the alarm trigger threshold, the logger automatically returns to its normal dial-in parameters, as set by the user.

HWM data loggers already play an important role in monitoring the environment and identifying wastage in order to minimise negative environmental impact. By enabling users to upgrade firmware and change settings “over the air” instead of having to drive to the site, and by providing accelerated monitoring in response to alarms, the equipment is now more environmentally friendly than ever before.
