Portable Spectrometer from Ocean Optics Ideal for Field Applications

Compact Jaz system packages powerful spectral sensing in palm sized unit

The Jaz spectrometer from Ocean Optics is a handheld, field-portable analytical instrument that combines low-power optical sensing and onboard computing power for custom applications ranging from chlorophyll analysis in leaves and plants to solar irradiance measurements and ozone monitoring.

Portable Spectrometer from Ocean Optics Ideal for Field Applications

Jaz is a family of stackable, modular and autonomous components that share common electronics and communications. This compact, monolithic system – a typical setup for field use is about 6 inches in height and weighs less than 2 lb. – comprises a miniature CCD-array spectrometer and a powerful microprocessor and onboard display with data logging capability, so that full spectra data can be acquired, processed and stored without the need for a PC. Ethernet and battery modules offer additional functionality for field use.

The Jaz Ethernet module has data storage capability via an SD card slot and allows users to connect to the Jaz unit via the Internet, making remote measurements possible and enabling the creation of networked sensing modules. For example, a community of Jaz users could map atmospheric ozone measurements around the world and share the data nearly instantaneously.

The Jaz Lithium-Ion battery module is rechargeable in the field via the solar cell or back in the lab using the Power over Ethernet connection (100 Mbps, IEEE 802.3-compliant 10/100 single-cable), the USB 2.0 port or an external power supply. The battery module also has a power-conserving sleep mode for long-term measurements and two additional SD card slots for storing data.

Also, the Jaz platform can be expanded to include light sources (VIS-NIR or LED) and additional spectrometer channels. Jaz can be connected to field-ready fibre optic accessories such as cosine corrected irradiance probes for solar irradiance measurements, optical fibres and probes for immersing in fluids or sampling of solid surfaces, and devices for adjusting the field of view of the sampling optic. Also available is the Jaz SpectroClip, a sampling device more measuring transmission and reflection of thin materials such as leaves and plants. A special holster makes the Jaz wearable, freeing your hands to manipulate sampling devices.

Because of its size and versatility, Jaz is a convenient analytical tool for applications across various industries and disciplines, including horticultural and ecological sciences; biotechnology; solar analysis and environmental monitoring; marine sciences and geological research; surface waters analysis and pollution monitoring such as site remediation and fenceline monitoring; and health and safety.

Infrared Beam Smoke Detection Protects Chemical Treatment Centre in Hungary

A major chemical treatment centre in Budapest, Hungary is using a FIRERAY 5000 and 14 FIRERAY F50R reflective infrared beam smoke detectors from Fire Fighting Enterprises (FFE) as part of its fire protection system.

Infrared FFE Beam Smoke Detection Protects Chemical Treatment Centre in Hungary

Infrared FFE Beam Smoke Detection Protects Chemical Treatment Centre in Hungary

The system was designed and installed by the company’s Hungarian distributor Elektrovill Biztonságtechnikai Zrt. The beam detectors are being used to cover large, open areas of the centre, as the wall-mounting and massive detection area per unit make them a more efficient and effective option in such an environment.

“We realised that in this aggressive chemical environment we would not be able to use normal point detectors” said Ákos Kürti, the Managing Director of Elektrovill. Each FIRERAY F50R unit can protect an area of up to 750m2 from a single wired installation point on a wall near the ceiling. The F50R hosts the IR beam transmitter and receiver in the same housing, with the beam being aimed at a prismatic reflector plate on the opposite wall to the unit. Smoke entering the beam path causes interference and reduction in signal strength, resulting in an alarm signal when a preset threshold is reached.

In the treatment centre, the detectors are situated in the warehousing and storage areas of the complex, which feature the type of open-plan architecture and high ceilings that make the most of the beam detectors’ particular advantages. “Deformation caused by change in temperature is a huge problem here in certain parts of the centre, but we prevented these types of faults with the new 5000 series” – said Kürti. Although not necessary in this instance, ATEX-approved FIRERAY models are also available for use in explosion-risk environments.

New pre-torque holders facilitate difficult rupture disc installations

Pressure-management specialist Elfab has introduced a range of pre-torque holders for its metal rupture discs.

New pre-torque holders facilitate difficult rupture disc installations

New pre-torque holders facilitate difficult rupture disc installations

The new range has been specifically designed to cope with installations where it is difficult to remove the disc and holder separately from the flange, and to reduce both the risk of the disc slipping or of either component becoming damaged.

The pre-torque holders are supplied in either forward- or reverse-acting formats, and have been designed to be compatible with Elfab’s unique magnetic burst detection system, Flo-Tel™+, in keeping with the rest of the company’s holder range.

Available in stainless steel as standard, the new holders offer a high level of corrosion resistance. They have been produced to comply with all internationally recognised flange standards.

The pre-torque holders will allow even more rupture disc users to benefit from Elfab’s technically advanced designs and detection.

Optical Redesigns its H-R Wide Field Pan Retinal Lens

New flanged contact element offers greater stability

Volk Optical has redesigned its H-R Wide Field pan retinal lens with a new flanged contact element for greater stability. The new contact prevents patients from squeezing the lens off the eye during diagnostic and laser work.

Optical Redesigns its H-R Wide Field Pan Retinal Lens

Optical Redesigns its H-R Wide Field Pan Retinal Lens

The H-R Wide Field’s deep field of view shows details as far out as the ora serrata and most importantly, is distortion free across the entire viewing area. H-R Wide Field’s contact lens design ensures clear visualization of retinal tears or lesions across the entire retinal surface. It provides a pan retinal view not possible with a non-contact slit lamp or BIO lens and a clear view of the entire retina not provided by a mirrored lens

The combination of Volk’s patented double aspheric glass design with low dispersion glass, ensures the highest resolution imaging across the entire viewing field. A low-profile, reduced-size housing simplifies manipulation of the lens within the orbit.

The lens provides .50x magnification, with 2.0x laser spot magnification. With the widest field of view and better image quality, the H-R Wide Field is an ideal upgrade from the Rodenstock Pan Fundus Laser lens. The H-R Wide Field is the best choice for wide field diagnosis and pan retinal photocoagulation laser treatment.
