Ocean Optics has added another option to its small-footprint near-infrared spectrometer line with the NIRQuest512-1.9. A high-resolution device with response from 1100-1900 nm, NIRQuest512-1.9 is well suited for applications ranging from monitoring changes in food production and chemical processing to characterizing lasers for semiconductor assembly and medical treatment.

NIRQuest512-1.9 has a high-stability, 512-element Hamamatsu Indium Gallium Arsenide (InGaAs)-array detector and is available with multiple grating and optical bench options for optimizing performance between 1100-1900 nm. The standard NIRQuest512-1.9 comes with a 150 lines/mm grating, 25 micron entrance slit and a non-fluorescing longpass filter that transmits >1000 nm. The filter helps to mitigate second-order effects.

NIRQuest512-1.9 has external hardware triggering functions that allow users to capture data when an external event occurs, or to trigger an event after data acquisition. Spectrometer operation is controlled using SpectraSuite software, a modular, Java-based spectroscopy platform.

The low dark noise characteristics of the NIRQuest make it possible to integrate the spectrometer (or expose the detector in the spectrometer to light) for longer durations, which is useful in low light level environments. Signal to noise ratio at full signal is >15000:1 at 100 millisecond integration time. High gain mode operation is available for applications where sensitivity is paramount.

Designed in response to customer demand, Dutch valve safety product manufacturer Netherlocks has developed the facility for entirely remote operation of its FAITH Partial Stroke Test (PST) system for ESD and HIPPS* valves. This means that the mechanically-safe, fully-online testing of these critical valves can now be initiated and performed from the safety and convenience of the control room, without having to manually access the valve.

Netherlocks’ commitment to innovative design and customer satisfaction has enabled the company to now make this product remotely operable without affecting usability or functionality. Traditionally, an operator would have to access the valve itself to manually insert a key to start a test. The new development means that the whole process can now be done remotely from the control room, making it significantly easier and faster.

The FAITH system at all times facilitates the partial stroke testing of valves, without any risk of overshoot or process interruption. The test is never aborted without getting results, and the unique design means that tests can be performed at real speed – just as it would be for real operation in an emergency. The mechanical limitation on the degree of valve closure guarantees there is no danger of actual shutdown or upsetting the plant due to overshooting of the test angle.

The FAITH’s simple mechanical design is key to the reliability of the system. It is a universal add-on product which is fitted directly between the valve and the actuator and replaces the original couplings. During partial stroke testing, FAITH’s mechanical steel blocking pins ensure that the valve can only turn to the preset test angle (i.e. 20 degrees). This also allows for maintenance during production.

All FAITH systems can be customized to fit directly between the valve and actuator without additional brackets. Models are available for both linear and rotating actuators, and electronic switches can also be added to the FAITH system to allow the control room to monitor the test.

Crowcon’s T3 Gas Tester Ensures Compliance

The device feeds the T3’s sensors a known concentration of gas, a process known as ‘bumping’, to ensure the sensors are working correctly. The way it works is simple: when a T3 is inserted into the Gas Tester, the T3 automatically switches into ‘bump’ mode and either passes or fails. Once the test is complete the T3 is removed and the bump result is then accepted by the user and automatically logged in the T3. When the test has passed, the user is safe in the knowledge their detector is in good working order while, if it fails the bump, it informs the user that their instrument needs to be re-calibrated or serviced. All this is done without requiring a power supply, as the T3 detector does all the work.

The Gas Tester can bump for flammable, oxygen, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide sensors. Capable of testing up to four gases within just 60 seconds, it is a fast and simple way of ensuring all T3 detectors in a fleet are working correctly. In addition, the device also tests that a T3’s visual and audible alarms are working correctly. When used with a fixed flow regulator, the Gas Tester allows approximately 100 bumps per 34 litres of quad gas (four gases in one cylinder), making it a very cost-effective option for owners of T3 detectors.

Rugged and robust, the T3 Gas Tester is a lightweight, stand-alone unit ideal for both on-site and in-field gas testing. Fast and simple to use, it features automatic gas detector recognition and automatic gas delivery. It can also be wall- or desk-mounted or attached to a DIN rail.
