FD-80 connector assemblies are constructed from all silica optical fibres with core sizes from 100µm to 1500µm. An epoxy-free cantilevered nose design isolates fibres from the connector, allowing safe dissipation of thermal energy without burning the surrounding material. Connectors have a laser polished fibre face to promote better power transmission and reduce risk of damage to the end face.

Fiberguide’s connectors are available with anti-reflective coating and various sheathing options to best fit environmental conditions. Optional integrated mode stripping removes stray cladding power for systems requiring enhanced performance.

Advantages of the new LED and Li-ion technology include longer battery life and increased instrument reliability. Consistent light output of bright, white LEDs improves examination and ease of diagnosis benefiting both physician and patient.

Lamps with LED technology and 5,500 Kelvin have a lifetime of at least 20,000 hours, compared to 20-30 hours with halogen and xenon alternatives. ri-scope® L combines this energy efficient LED technology with a long lasting lithium-ion battery for sustained high-power performance and significant cost savings.

All ri-scope® L ophthalmoscopes have a modular design featuring high-performance optics with aspherical condenser glass lenses and reduced reflection. Flow Selection Valves use a flexible diaphragm that isolates the solenoid actuator from the fluid path. All wetted parts are constructed from highly inert, non-metallic materials such as PTFE or PEEK. Flow Selection Valves are available in a range of orifice sizes from 0.032” to 0.125”, and power ratings from two to eight watts.

Valves feature a radial manifold block, eliminating the differences in flow path length and timing found in linear manifolds. Each solenoid actuator is individually adjusted by the manufacturer to ensure equal flow rates at the same pressure.

NanoCalc systems are available for a range of wavelength, sampling method and optical layer thickness requirements (from 1.0 nm to 250 µm). Users can select among four standard models between ~200-1700 nm and combine them with software, reflection probes, optical fibres and various accessories. For applications in the Visible (400-850 nm) or UV-Visible (250-1050 nm), users have the added convenience of selecting preconfigured systems comprising the NanoCalc, a reflection probe and sampling stage, a calibrated Si-SiO2 5-step reference wafer and software that analyses up to 10 optical layers.

For more demanding applications, NanoCalc systems are available with an extensive range of add-on software, optical fibres and metrology accessories such as mapping stages and adapters for microscopes and micro-spot focusing objectives.

NanoCalc systems are especially useful for applications such as transmission and reflection measurements of anti-reflective and hardness coatings, amorphous silicon on solar panels, OLED displays, determination of photoresist layers for photomasks and testing the optical properties of optical coatings.

TL Jones’s Dinesh Musalekar now general manager for India, Middle East and Africa

Dinesh enjoys nearly two decades’ experience of the elevator industry, gained in sales, operations, project and profit centre roles at major OEMs. He joined TL Jones in 2005 to build and lead the company’s operations in India, and has recently overseen the creation of a manufacturing facility for infrared light curtains in the region. Dinesh graduated with a BEng in Electronics & Communications from Karnataka University and holds an MBA in Management from Mumbai University.

Ocean Optics Spectrometers Land Safely on Mars

Three Ocean Optics (www.OceanOptics.com) instruments have completed their eight month journey to Mars to study soil composition as part of the ChemCam mission. NASA’s Mars Science Lab rover, Curiosity, was launched last November carrying customized Ocean Optics HR2000 spectrometers.

The Curiosity Rover has the most advanced scientific instrumentation ever used to study the surface of Mars, and weighing in at 1 ton, has the heaviest payload. The 7 minute descent through Mars’ atmosphere relied on a complex landing sequence never before attempted. To withstand the rigors of space travel and descent, the onboard Ocean Optics spectrometers were modified to handle extreme temperature ranges, radiation, shock and vibration.

After 14 tense minutes of waiting (the amount of time it takes for a signal to reach NASA’s mission control from Mars), NASA was able to confirm that Curiosity survived the descent intact. Shortly after, it beamed back the first pictures from the surface of the Gale Crater where it landed. Now, the work begins for the Ocean Optics spectrometers as the rover journeys to Mount Sharp, a 3 mile high mountain inside the crater, collecting data as it goes.

The three modular HR2000 high-resolution miniature fibre optic spectrometers will study Martian rock and soil composition using Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS). Each ChemCam spectrometer is configured to detect elemental signatures over a different wavelength of light: 240-336 nm, 380-470 nm, and 470-850 nm. The use of the three spectrometers simplifies the design and creates redundancy, as many elements under study have spectral lines in more than one of the spectral ranges covered by the three units.

Ocean Optics equipment has been used by NASA researchers for missions both on Earth and in space. A custom Ocean Optics spectrometer named ALICE was instrumental in detecting the presence of water ice on the moon during the LCROSS mission. The company’s modular Jaz spectrometer scaled Mt. Everest with a team that included NASA astronaut Scott Parazynski to measure solar irradiance at extreme altitude.
