Blood pressure monitoring company SunTech Medical acquired by Halma p.l.c.

SunTech Medical (www.suntechmed.com), a market leader in non-invasive blood pressure measurement products and technologies, has been acquired by UK-based Halma p.l.c., a safety, health and environmental technology group.

The company’s business groups focus on industrial safety, health and analysis, and infrastructure sensors.

The program seeks innovative and novel proposals that solve challenging problems and improve the world using optical sensing. Applicants from all disciplines are encouraged to apply before the September 1, 2012 deadline.

The program is designed to facilitate open innovation and spur the development of new optical sensing technologies with potential for market commercialization. The international program is open to applicants from academia and industry around the world. 2011 winners had a diverse range of ideas with extremely high quality proposals ranging from novel spectrometer and spectral imaging architectures to emerging applications as diverse as low cost surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy, early prostate cancer detection techniques, and new nano-liter microfluidic chip architectures.

The Blue Ocean grants are divided into two phases. Phase I grants are issued to fund initial evaluation and development of ideas and technologies to the proof of concept phase. Phase II grants will be issued to nurture a proposed technology through proof of concept in a way that enables the potential of market commercialization.

Last year the company originally planned to award up to 10 Phase I grants of up to $10,000, but expanded that number to 13 grants when the grant committee, made up of Ocean Optics Chief Technology Officer Jason M. Eichenholz and independent photonics experts, felt strongly compelled to find funding for three additional worthy recipients. In addition, another seven strong submissions were awarded development grants. Development grant recipients were given or loaned Ocean Optics equipment to facilitate progression of their grant ideas, enabling them to be submitted to both last year’s Phase II program as well as this year’s Phase I process.

“The Blue Ocean Grants program is a unique combination of open innovation and crowd sourcing from all disciplines,” explains Ocean Optics Chief Technology Officer Jason M. Eichenholz. “As 2011 was our first year, we didn’t quite know what to expect and were elated by the quality and quantity of the applications from around the world. We’re currently evaluating the strong proposals from last year’s winners to determine who will move on to Phase II funding.”

Grant awards will again be determined by Eichenholz and an expanded panel of independent photonics experts, based on technical merit, potential commercial viability, and the ability to change the world for the better via optical sensing. The simple application asks two fundamental questions: What is the idea and how will it be implemented or tested?

The illumia lite overcomes the drawbacks inherent in other handhelds by incorporating a spectrometer calibrated for absolute spectral flux and employs an integrating sphere in its design. This combination delivers more complete spectral flux measurement capability than simple illuminance meters using near cosine receivers. The ergonomic handheld instrument measures both luminous flux and colour of a device under test, including LEDs and other sources up to 1 cm in diameter. A built-in auxiliary lamp provides self-absorption correction for highly accurate results.

The luminous flux range of illumia lite is 0.1 lumens to 5000 lumens, with a wavelength resolution of <5nm and accuracy of <0.5nm. Data is retrieved via USB connection to any laptop or PC and analysed with Labsphere’s easy-to-use MtrX-Spec software. The software calculates all industry standard colour parameters such as x, y, CCT, CRI, and lumens, as well as spectral irradiance.

Touch the Future with new MicroCorr Touch Correlator from HWM

Like most traditional correlators, the MicroCorr Touch provides default filter settings for a wide range of different pipe materials and sizes. However, due to the number of unknown variables that can change the frequency of leak noise, default filter settings will never be optimised for every leak situation. Experienced users can manually change the filter settings to find the leak, but this is often a time consuming process involving multiple correlations. Even then it can be ‘hit or miss’ to successfully locate the leak. With AFIS, the MicroCorr Touch effectively builds an expert user into the unit.

AFIS works by automatically applying multiple filter settings to determine the best possible correlation result every time. The system runs 55 different filter combinations on the correlation data, checking the quality of the result and optimising the filter settings as required, until the clearest and most accurate result can be presented. Working on live or pre-recorded data, tests have shown AFIS to significantly improve leak pinpointing on almost any pipe – effectively making manual filter setting a thing of the past.

In addition to this advanced software, HWM has incorporated the latest technological developments into the MicroCorr Touch’s hardware: best-in-class sensors, the VGA touchscreen, and an innovative carrying case that can charge the components from a mains or vehicle connection.

Specially developed by HWM for the new correlator, the new accelerometer sensors offer unparalleled sensitivity in the marketplace. In a recent project in Shandong, China, the local water company had visibly identified a leak presence, but correlators from three different companies were unable to even detect a leak signal – let alone pinpoint where it was on the pipe. When the MicroCorr Touch was deployed it immediately identified the leak and then determined its position to within 0.1m, confirmed by ground microphone and subsequent excavation.

The full colour touchscreen makes entering data incredibly easy, with an intuitive menu system quickly guiding operators step-by-step through the correlation process. By maximising the screen space without the need for button controls, viewing results and analysing the data is also easier and clearer than on traditional units. A high contrast mode for increased clarity in bright sunlight has also been built in, and the on-screen controls designed and tested for use with gloves, ensuring that the MicroCorr Touch retains its usability and functionality in all weather conditions.

The compact, purpose-designed charging case not only carries and protects all components, but also enables the base station and outstations to be charged from the mains or a vehicle via a single power lead. The charging status of each component is displayed on a panel inside the case, and units can be stowed with the sensors still connected. This means that a leak finding team can simply stow the kit safely in the case between jobs for it to be charged and ready for immediate deployment upon arrival.

MicroCorr Touch has been designed from the ground up by experts in both the technology and its application in the field. The result is a correlator that combines cutting edge design and highly innovative functionality to deliver outstanding results with the minimum amount of effort required from the operator.
