Optical oxygen and pH sensor patches proven for use in range of bio-sensitive applications

Expanding the potential applications for its oxygen and pH sensing patches, Ocean Optics (www.oceanoptics.com) has obtained United States Pharmacopeia (USP) Class VI certification for these products. The company’s HIOXY coating for RedEye Oxygen patches and Sol-gel coating for pH applications have successfully met the stringent testing criteria required for this certification.

Ocean Optics’ optical O2 and pH sensors designed for accurate, real-time, in situ measurements in packaging and other enclosed containers. The proprietary sensor coating materials do not consume the sample and can be applied to substrates such as probes, self-adhesive acrylic patches (the format tested for USP Class VI) and microtiter wells. Coating options are available for general lab use, high-sensitivity applications and hydrocarbon-rich environments. Depending on the application, oxygen presence or pH can be visually determined by color change with a handheld LED, or a fluorometer can be used to make exact measurements.

The USP is a non-governmental standards setting organization. Class VI is its most stringent testing protocol for classification of plastics used in medicines and other health care technologies. With USP Class VI certification, the biocompatibility, toxicity and extractables of Ocean Optics’ sensor coatings are assured to be compatible with biological and pharmaceutical processes and implantable devices. Testing and certification were provided by NAMSA (Northwood, Ohio, USA).

Volk’s MERLIN® Condensing Lens Assembly Facilitates Switches Between Corneal and Retinal Views

Reduces microscope working height, maximizes working space during vitreoretinal surgery

Volk Optical has built on its recently launched manually operated MERLIN® with a new Condensing Lens Assembly (CLA). This new option provides vitreoretinal surgeons the same detailed retinal views through the microscope, with the convenience of fully automated operation.

The MERLIN® provides precise control of non-contact lens position and focus for clear, crisp views during vitreoretinal surgery.  With the CLA, lens positioning is system directed via a foot pedal or the device’s lens positioning unit (LPU). When the LPU is swung into the surgical field bringing the Volk lens into position, the CLA automatically moves the condensing lens into the optical pathway to provide crisp retinal views. A foot pedal control for the CLA is also available if preferred. With the condensing lens in place, microscope working height is reduced and refocusing between corneal and retinal views is minimized.

The LPU is fully rotational around the optical axis for optimal lens position in relation to the patient. The LPU and lens swing completely out of the surgical field when working on the cornea, maximizing space for surgical manipulation.

Compatible with all major surgical microscopes, with Volk’s new ROLS∞ (Infinity) reinverter, and the choice of three lenses, the modular MERLIN® system is the most advanced method for non contact retinal viewing. Volk’s ROLS∞ allows users to adjust the prism to fit each individual microscope’s optical pathway, reducing image shift and vignetting when engaging the optical prism.

The MERLIN® lenses include:  a wide angle with the widest field of view available; a small diameter wide angle exclusive to Volk for working with narrow-browed patients; and a mid field with higher magnification for more detailed examination of the posterior pole to the equator.  The autoclave sterilisable glass lenses offer the higher optical quality and lower lifetime costs than comparable systems using disposable lenses.

Unlike other currently available secondary standards, the PCU is fully self-contained and does not require any additional support equipment or line power. It is as simple as having a tech arrive on site, plug the unit into the system and take readings. The PCU also has on-board digital output to send flow data to a laptop or other computer system via multi-drop RS-232 communications for simultaneous data acquisition.

Each of the integrated meters on the PCU displays mass flow, volumetric flow, pressure & temperature with high accuracy calibration of +/- (0.4% of reading + .2% of full scale). The ranges of the flow meters are specified by the end user upon ordering the PCU. Twenty pre-set selectable gas calibrations and ten pre-set gas mix calibrations (specific gas mixes and calibrations) are available.

Alternate and adjustable standard temperature & pressure simplifies comparisons to other flow devices. The unit has an integrated totaliser for tests that require long term averaging.  Alicat’s FlowVisionSC GUI software is included, enabling graphing, data acquisition, and scripted polling.

The PCU can be plugged into wall power or powered by two standard 9V batteries. The unit will alert the user via a bright led indicator to replace the batteries when power falls below a minimum threshold. Like Alicat’s standard line of flow devices, the PCU has no large mechanical parts to service or fail.  All of Alicat’s products carry the CE marking and are NIST traceable.

Tritech’s Latest Version of Seanet Pro is Released

Tritech International has released its latest version of its Seanet survey data acquisition, display and logging software package. The Seanet Pro, version 2 offers users remote networkability, allowing subsea data to be streamed between several PCs connected to the same Local Area Network on the surface.

Building on existing capability to network multiple subsea sensors, the package has been updated in line with Tritech’s existing and imminent new product ranges, including SeaKing Hammerhead DST sonar and the Gemini multibeam range. The system also provides users with the ability to display a multitude of Tritech sensors and third party data through Seanet Pro at any one time.

Elfab to Safeguard World’s First LNG Plant Supplied by Coal Seam Gas

Elfab, Europe’s leading supplier of rupture discs, has won a USD400k contract to meet the pressure relief requirements of a leading British gas and energy group’s largest ever investment, a liquefied natural gas (LNG) development in north-east Australia.

The project is the first in the world to liquefy and ship gas produced from coal deposits. The first LNG exports are planned to commence from 2014, underpinned by agreements in Chile, China, Japan and Singapore for the purchase of up to 9.5 million tonnes per annum of LNG.

The contract specifies Elfab’s patented Opti-Gard™ rupture disc, with its unique three per cent tolerance. In addition, Elfab had to satisfy complex logistical requirements, with sub-contract manufacturing taking place in China before final on-site assembly in Australia.

Elfab worked closely with the customer’s subcontractors and drew on 50 years’ experience in pressure management design to make product improvements that delivered a cost- effective but technically advanced solution.

Similar products use a stainless steel outer case, which although not in contact with the fluid under normal use, may still be unsuitable to some users. Diba’s new PEEK cased ferrule has an inert PTFE sealing face and a PEEK outer case, which replaces the usual stainless steel.

Sizes are available from 1/16” and 1/8” OD semi-rigid tubing, and ¼” – 28 UNF and M6 threaded ports. PEEK cased ferrules are compatible with Diba’s Omni-Lok, Gripper and Click-N-Seal fittings. Its double diameter shell fits into the recesses of Omni-Lok fitting nuts for optimal thread engagement, with maximum sealing surface.
