The Merlin mounts beneath the optical pathway of the surgical microscope, holding a non-contact lens in place and allowing accurate positioning and fine focus control.  Its rotational assembly quickly and easily moves the lens out of the surgical field when not in use.  The system is fully steam autoclavable; additional components can be purchased a la carte to facilitate sterilization scheduling.

Unlike traditional ROLS reinverters, with a fixed prism position for each microscope type, the ROLS (Infinity) reinverter allows prism adjustment to fit each individual microscope’s optical pathway.  To accommodate the minute shifts that exist from one microscope to the next, Volk’s new design has mechanisms to set and lock the internal prism in the correct alignment for a completely custom fit.  Precise control of the optical pathway results in the best possible image quality.

The PermaView glass Volk lenses used with the system deliver a level of optical quality not possible with disposable lenses.  Three lens styles are available to suit individual surgeons’ needs–one to deliver the widest field views approaching the ora serrata, a mid-field lens for higher magnification to the equator, and a wide-field small diameter lens to free up space in the working area.

Volk’s proprietary PermaView glass prevents mineral deposits during repeated steam sterilization, maintaining the lens clarity that comes with Volk’s patented double aspheric design.  The reusable lenses deliver better image quality and, with a long service life, are significantly more cost-effective than disposable lenses.

TL Jones supplies elevator light curtains and displays to India’s Delhi Metro

TL Jones, the leading manufacturer of elevator passenger safety equipment, has supplied 185 elevator light curtains and 555 dot-matrix displays to the Delhi Metro (DMRC) in India. The passenger safety and information products are fitted to elevators supplied by Kone and Johnson Lifts. Each elevator features Pana40 3D light curtains and three PD3001 LED displays.

The Pana40 3D incorporates two independent detection systems. The first is a light curtain of infrared beams criss-crossing the elevator car’s doors; the second a 3D proximity detection system in the landing zone. Any object interrupting the direct beams or reflections within the 3D detection zone will trigger the system and re-open the elevator doors.

Specific benefits of the Pana40 3D include increased passenger safety and improved traffic flow, as well as reduced collisions between trolleys, wheelchairs or pushchairs and the elevator doors. Typical applications include busy public buildings such as hospitals, shopping centres, hotels, offices, passenger terminals and public transport systems.

The detectors are manufactured in various profiles to suit a variety of elevator doors, including both centre- and side-opening doors.

The Delhi Metro is a rapid transit system built and operated by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited, serving Delhi, Gurgaon and Noida in the National Capital Region of India. The network consists of six lines with a total length of 156 kilometres (97 miles) and 132 stations. It uses a combination of elevated, ground-level and underground lines.

Bladderless sphygmomanometer cuff from Riester is reusable and easily disinfected

German diagnostic instrument manufacturer Riester now offers a one-piece-cuff for all its sphygmomanometers as standard. The new bladderless nylon Velcro cuff is reusable over 10,000 times and washable up to 60°C. Cleaning and disinfection for the one-piece-cuff is much easier than the standard cuff as it can be immersed completely into an alcohol disinfection solution after use. Made of latex-free material, it is especially practical for use in hospitals as it saves time and prevents contamination.

Ocean Optics (www.oceanoptics.com) has introduced a family of low-cost, high-performance CMOS detector-based spectrometers that are ideal for embedding into OEM devices. Despite its tiny footprint – 40 mm x 42 mm square and 24 mm high – STS provides performance comparable to larger systems: full spectral analysis with low stray light, high signal to noise (>1500:1) and typical optical resolution of ~1.5 nm (FWHM).

STS is a great option for a range of VIS-NIR applications including characterization of LEDs and absorbance/transmittance of various samples and is ideal for OEM applications where one or more wavelengths are being monitored and highly reproducible results are necessary.

The STS Microspectrometer is available in standard models with 350-800 nm and 650-1100 nm wavelength coverage. Customization of wavelength range, entrance aperture and other optical bench accessories is available for high-volume and OEM customers. Also, unlike other microspectrometers, STS has a built-in shutter for making dark measurements. Operating software is priced separately and provides a full range of spectroscopic functions as well as control of the shutter. Packages for developing customized software for STS are also available.

At the heart of the STS is a 1024-element CMOS detector in a crossed Czerny Turner optical bench. The bench is distinguished by specially designed collimating and focusing mirrors and a 600 lines/mm groove density grating. Its optical design and advanced CMOS detector elevate STS to performance levels comparable to larger and more expensive spectrometers. For example, STS has 14-bit A/D resolution and has low power consumption of just 0.75 W. Also, with customization of the entrance aperture, optical resolution <1.0 nm (FWHM) is possible. This makes STS an attractive option for a wide range of applications.

The latest addition to Elfab’s industry-leading Opti-Gard range, Opti-Gard SoLo was developed specifically for low-pressure applications from two psig. Confined Space Entry – is your gas detector right for the job?

Working in confined spaces is difficult at the best of times. Operators often have to wear full PPE (personal protective equipment), are usually harnessed and may be carrying tools and equipment to complete the task in hand (e.g. welding). The last thing a worker in this environment needs to worry about is his or her gas detector. It should be designed specifically for confined space entry (CSE) applications, be unobtrusive and have a clear display that is easy to see at a glance.

A confined space can include a chamber, tank, vat, silo, pit, trench, pipe, sewer, flue, well or other similar space in which, by virtue of its enclosed nature, there arises a reasonably foreseeable risk.

This covers just about any industrial activity but is especially applicable to the utilities industries (water and wastewater, electricity, telecommunications and gas), construction, hydrocarbon exploration and processing, petrochemicals, marine applications, agriculture, food processing, wine making and brewing, as well as emergency services.

While the best advice is, if at all possible, to avoid entering confined spaces, this is obviously not always an option. In the above mentioned industries there will always be occasions when workers or emergency services personnel need to enter potentially dangerous areas to carry out inspections, routine maintenance, perform emergency repairs or effect rescues.

There is a wide range of equipment required for CSE environments and the supply industry is well developed, with a plethora of PPE and safety equipment available. The one area of CSE where improvement is needed and where compromises have, to date, always had to be made, is gas detection.

Users of gas detectors have typically had to make a choice between large pumped units, small diffusion models, or models with ‘parasitic’ pumps, which are easily lost or damaged. Handheld detectors that measure a wider range of gases tend to have front-mount displays and are usually optimised for leak location or ‘hot work’ permit issue, rather than being suitable for CSE work.

So, what are the requirements of the ‘ideal’ CSE gas detector? Crowcon has done extensive market research among users and fleet managers around the globe and found the following five features to be essential:

•    Simple to use.
•    Bright, easy to read display.
•    Long battery life (for at least one full shift, and preferably two).
•    Robust construction.
•     Reliable detection (while not being the focus of the task at hand, unreliable detectors can halt it quickly).

These features may all seem obvious, but finding a gas detector that includes all of them, as well as other important characteristics has, until now, been impossible.

With this feedback in mind, Crowcon went back to the drawing board. The result is Gas-Pro, a design perfectly suited for CSE applications to comply with hazardous area and health and safety standards.

Specific CSE features of the new Gas-Pro include:

Many OEMs use the same rocker isolation valves from the core of the diagnostic instrument to control the system’s waste line. While these valves are efficient at handling test sample and reagent flow, the higher flow rates and thicker consistencies of waste fluid often result in clogs. The diagnostic system must then be shut down, requiring expensive maintenance and part replacement to resume operation.

When pinch valves are used in waste lines, both the occurrence and severity of this problem are reduced. Bio-Chem Fluidics’ pinch valves offer less flow restriction, simpler fluid paths, and larger minimum gaps than rocker valves to reduce the likelihood of clogging. Pinch tubing wears in a predictable manner for easy preventive maintenance scheduling, and can easily be replaced by the user without the need for a service technician.

Bio-Chem Fluidics pinch valves have few moving parts for reliable operation. Only the tubing comes in contact with the fluid path, and exterior surfaces can withstand common cleaning agents.
