SteadiQ from Ocean Optics Ensures Accurate Spectrometer Measurements in Extreme Environments

A new accessory from Ocean Optics (www.oceanoptics.com) is broadening the range of applications for its field-portable spectrometers.  The SteadiQ provides a temperature controlled atmosphere, helping to stabilize temperature effects and eliminate temperature drift in inclement conditions or extreme temperatures from -20C to 50°C. The rugged, portable device assures more accurate, reliable results in field applications including solar irradiance, volcanic observation, greenhouse monitoring, and industrial environments such as cold food storage.

Available in both UV (200-1100 nm) and Vis-NIR (400-2500 nm) versions, the SteadiQ interfaces directly with Ocean Optics’ USB2000+, USB4000, HR2000+, HR4000, Maya2000, Maya2000 Pro, QE65000, and NIRQuest spectrometers.  In extreme hot or extreme cold conditions, the unit operates independently from outside temperatures.  It connects easily to the spectrometer with preconfigured plug-ins and communicates via the spectrometer’s USB port.

Available in a range of integrating sphere sizes from 50cm to 193cm, the TOCS systems are designed for both 2pi and 4pi measurement geometries.  A lamp measurement integrating sphere, high resolution CCD array spectrometer, thermal plate with temperature controller, auxiliary lamp, calibration source, power supply and Labsphere’s powerful TOCS-SS software comprise the basic system.  Owners of current Labsphere and SphereOptics spectral lamp measurement systems may purchase an upgrade retrofit to the TOCS system to achieve LM-79 compliance.

Labsphere’s TOCS-SS is a powerful, accurate software which automates procedures for measuring spectral characteristics, and controlling current and temperature.  Users control LED temperature and operating current at specified ranges, measuring and characterizing the device under test over a wide temperature range. The simultaneously collected electrical, optical and thermal data is graphed for quick on-screen viewing and can be exported to Excel format for in-depth analysis.

The TOCS can be customized with the integrating sphere size, calibration source and accessories to fit testing needs.

The SuperVu Galilean loupes are available in 2.0x, 2.5x and 3x magnification and working distances from 34cm to 50cm. Each lens can be focused individually and features superior depth of field that allows the user to move without the area being viewed going out of focus. In addition, Riester also offer high resolution SuperVu Hi-Res Galilean Loupes at 3x magnification with a 15% increased field of view and perfectly flat field from edge to edge. Made from an ultra-lightweight metal alloy, SuperVu loupes are stylish yet tough, and a ‘flip-up’ facility allows them to be moved out of the way when magnification is not required.

The XL Advantage loupes offer higher magnification for advanced surgical procedures at 3.5x, 4.5x and 5.5x magnification. The XL precision lenses are treated with a non-reflecting protective coating to achieve an excellent image and high prismatic quality ensures true image.

Customers have the choice of attaching binocular loupes to either the light Riester spectacle frame or the brow band system. In addition, Riester offers the K-LED brow lamp that provides homogeneous light with a brightness of up to 18000 Lux. The 3W LED is coaxially attached to the frame and operates with a Li-ion battery pack enabling continuous operation of up to 4 hours.

The LMm is very easy to operate. By pointing the device’s laser beam towards a suspected leak or survey line, such as a gas pipe or ceiling, the concentration of methane is measured by detecting the difference between the light emitted and the light received.

The device uses an innovative laser diode tuned specifically to the characteristics of methane, and the level is displayed on the ppm.m* readout. On start-up the instrument performs a self check and verifies the operation and calibration of the laser diode by referencing an inbuilt methane cell. This ensures consistent high performance, accuracy and reliability.

ATEX approval allows the LMm to be used in Zone 1 hazardous areas for on-plant use, in M2 mining applications, as well as detecting escapes in hard to reach or inaccessible areas such as roof spaces, pipelines crossing rivers or roads, fenced enclosures and landfill sites. This means there is no longer a need for personnel to put themselves at risk by entering suspected escape areas.

Not just portable, but truly handheld, the LMm weighs just 600g (1.3lbs), including the battery, and measures just 70mm x 179mm x 42mm (2.8 x 7 x 1.6 inches). Features include a full colour numeric or graphical display, audio and visual alarms, six hours minimum battery life per charge (four hour recharge), IP54 ingress protection, automatic ranging and a wide operating temperature range of -17°C to +50°C (1°F to 122°F).

Ocean Optics SpectraSuite-PAR Spectroscopy Software add-on Calculates Photosynthetically Active Radiation Parameters

A new add-on module for Ocean Optics’ (www.OceanOptics.com) SpectraSuite Spectrometer Operating Software allows users of the company’s miniature spectrometers and Jaz optical sensing systems to calculate Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR), an important parameter for evaluating the effect of light on plant growth.

SpectraSuite-PAR uses the absolute irradiance spectrum (captured by the spectrometer) of the light incident on plants and other samples and conveniently converts the irradiance values from µW/cm2 (microwatts per square centimeter) to µmol/m2/s (micromoles per square meter per second), the measurement unit more commonly used for PAR analysis.

In addition to calculating total PAR, SpectraSuite-PAR allows users to define up to five “wavelength bins” (the range of wavelengths to be covered in each data bin), which can be correlated to different phases of plant growth. For example, a bin can be configured over the 400-480 nm range to capture the effects of the blue region of the spectrum, which is typically associated with early stages of plant growth. Also, customers can calculate both the percentage of light in each bin and the red/far red ratio, a parameter associated with plant development and structure.

SpectraSuite-PAR is a particularly powerful analytical tool when used as part of a field-portable Jaz sensing system configured for horticultural applications. Jaz is a family of modular, stackable components — a typical setup for field use is about the size of a few decks of cards — that share common electronics and communications. At its heart is a miniature CCD-array spectrometer, or light measuring device, available with user-selected grating and slit options optimized for a variety of optical sensing application needs. Also incorporated into the Jaz stack is a powerful microprocessor and onboard display with data logging capability, so that full spectra data can be acquired, processed and stored to an SD card without the need for a PC. Jaz irradiance measurement software is also available and nicely complements the SpectraSuite-PAR functions.

SpectraSuite is the standard operating software for Ocean Optics spectrometers. The modular, Java-based spectroscopy software platform operates on Windows, Macintosh and Linux operating systems. The SpectraSuite interface is virtually identical on all operating systems yet retains the familiar appearance of an application native to each OS. SpectraSuite has a wide range of standard functions, from managing multiple USB spectrometers and identifying center wavelength and other peak metrics to calculating color parameters such as CIE illuminants and Color Rendering Index and measuring photometric values such as luminous flux and photopic standard observer functions.
