Meets LM-79 and LM-80 standards for complete characterization of large light sources

With lighting technology advancing to include larger and more complex devices, Labsphere (www.labsphere.com) has introduced the LMS-3M three meter integrating sphere for complete optical characterization of these larger lamps and luminaries.  The sphere complies with IESNA LM-79 and LM-80 standards to deliver accurate and reproducible measurements of any lamp, up to 2m linear lamps and 30cm luminaries.

The three meter lamp measurement integrating sphere accommodates light sources positioned base up, base down, or longitudinally, to easily and efficiently measure virtually any lamp type, including fluorescents up to 2m in length.  The design also allows for forward and partial flux measurements of test sources that are board mounted or heat-sinked.
The larger sphere better integrates light for more reliable testing of a device’s photometric and colorimetric performance with measurements of Total Spectral Flux, Luminous Flux, Correlated Colour Temperature (CCT), Colour Rendering Index (CRI), and Chromaticity.  Measurement data relies only on the test device’s true power, not on the size, shape, or spectral distribution.

The near-Lambertian properties of the sphere’s Spectraflect® interior coating provide a uniform dispersion of light that integrates and reduces hotspots better than other available sphere coatings materials. Spectraflect exhibits reflectance values of 98% and is spectrally flat through the visible spectrum for higher optical efficiency on low lumen lamps.

The LMS-3M is designed to measure a variety of lamps and luminaires on the same system with little adjustment. The standard sphere geometry accommodates 4pi measurement, and with optional aperture reducers, can easily be configured for 2pi measurement.  Baffled intake and output ports and an ambient air temperature controller maintain and monitor the temperature inside the measurement environment, complying with Energy Star requirements.  The new sphere size fully integrates with all Labsphere photometric and spectroradiometric systems and software so current system users may upgrade easily.

Originally developed for ultra high reliability telecommunications, the metal coating preserves the fibre’s mechanical strength and provides resistance against static fatigue caused by long term tensile loading. Gold and aluminium coated fibres also can withstand a wide range of temperatures, with aluminium coated fibres rated from -269°C to +400°C and gold rated from -269°C to 700°C.

Gold or aluminium coating can be applied on continuous lengths to a wide variety of multimode, step index, graded index and single mode fibres. Core to clad ratios of 1.1, 1.2 and 1.4 are available with numerical apertures of 0.12 and 0.26. Non-standard sizes can also be manufactured by request.

Options range from modular setups to fully integrated systems

Modular options allow users to configure custom Raman systems, tailored to their application. The Ocean Optics high-sensitivity QE65000 Spectrometer is a good foundation, with additional options that include Bragg grating-stabilized 532 nm and 785 nm diode lasers, probes for solid or liquid samples and add-on software modules for sophisticated data analysis. Among the software options are a package for chemometric analysis of various substances, including complex mixtures; a tool for creating and managing spectral libraries; and a tool for supporting compliance with 21 CFR 11, a Food and Drug Administration guideline on electronic records and signatures.

For off-the-shelf solutions, Ocean Optics has expanded its range of fully integrated Raman systems.  All system options include the spectrometer, a 532 nm or 785 nm laser, operating software and sampling accessories for probe- or cuvette-based analysis. The 532 nm laser version has spectral range of 200-3400 cm-1 (Stokes shift) and spectral resolution of ~10 cm-1. Several 785 nm laser options are available, including an economical system ideal for teaching labs and a pair of robust laboratory-grade systems with slightly narrower spectral ranges (150-1800 cm-1 and 150-3200 cm-1) and spectral resolution of ~6-10 cm-1.  In addition, Ocean Optics has available a budget-friendly handheld Raman system, the RSL-Plus, which includes an onboard mini-computer, fiber optic probe and sample compartment.

Ocean Optics also offers additional Raman accessories such as calibration standards, sample compartments and safety glasses. Application-ready combinations of Raman systems, software and accessories are available as off-the-shelf kits.

Available in five different reflectance values, Alucore targets provide constant high reflectivity over the wavelength range from 250 to 2500 nm. A thin sheet of proprietary PFTE material is laminated to an aluminium honeycombed structured plate, resulting in a rugged yet lower weight target. Thermally stable over the range -50°C to 250°C, chemically inert, and resistant to water and most solvents, Alucore targets maintain diffuse and lambertian characteristic regardless of environment. The relative size and durability make these targets equally well suited to laboratory and field applications.

Labsphere’s laminating technique also allows for multiple reflectances on one target with no visible seams. Targets can be customised to any size and combination of white or gray scale reflectances. All Alucore targets can be provided with National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) or Physikalisch Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) traceable calibration certificates.

Alucore targets have been deployed in applications ranging from calibration of spectrophotometers in remote field locations to runways for calibration of airplane navigation instruments. Readings are shown on a large LCD display with the date and time, and pulse rate measurements are accompanied by an acoustic signal. The ri-champion® N automatically stores the last measurement in its system and can hold up to 99 values in its memory.

Easy to use and developed to achieve a high level of accuracy, blood pressure is measured to within ±3mm Hg and pulse to ± 5% of the reading. Portable at just over 16cm high, the device has a modern, ergonomic design that allows the cuff to be stored neatly behind the monitor and operates on 4 included AA batteries, although a mains adapter is optional.

High-intensity Pulsed Xenon Source for Ocean Optics’ Jaz Sensing Module

Low-power source offers high pulse rate with great pulse-to-pulse stability

Miniature spectroscopy pioneer Ocean Optics (www.OceanOptics.com) has added a pulsed xenon light source option for its Jaz modular sensing system. The Jaz-PX is a high flash rate, short-arc xenon lamp especially useful for UV-Vis applications such as absorbance, bioreflectance, fluorescence and phosphorescence. The lamp has maximum pulse frequency of 500 Hz and spectral response from 190-1000 nm.

Jaz is a family of stackable, modular components that share common electronics and communications. At its heart is a miniature linear CCD-array spectrometer, available with user-selected grating and entrance slit optimized for a variety of application needs, in a design that accommodates up to 8 spectrometer channels. Each Jaz stack includes a powerful onboard microprocessor and display, which eliminate the need for a PC. Additional Jaz modules are available for battery operation and Ethernet connectivity, as well as for sample illumination (via UV-Vis and Vis-NIR sources) and excitation (via LEDs).

The Jaz-PX operates in both free running and triggered modes, which allow its pulses to be coordinated with other devices in the Jaz stack. Flash-to-flash stability is <1% and the flash rate is 500 Hz. Jaz-PX has an SMA 905 connector that couples to Ocean Optics accessories, including optical fibres, cuvette holders, probes and other sampling optics. Because it produces a pulsed signal, the Jaz-PX is less likely to cause solarisation in optical fibre assemblies, which can occur when fibres are illuminated with signal <260 nm.

In addition, Jaz can be configured for a variety of field, lab and process setups. The Jaz-PX is ideal for field applications such as bioreflectance that require a high-intensity, low-power source as no external power supply is required.  When used in the field, the lamp will operate from the power of the battery for approximately 3.5-4 hours. Additional power is available through an optional 50 Watt-hour Jaz battery extender.

All wetted parts in BCF’s Isolation Valves are constructed from non-metallic, inert materials to eliminate contamination of the fluid stream through the valve. The valves’ solenoid actuation mechanism is “isolated” from the fluid with a flexible diaphragm. This eliminates the need for the solenoid and casing to be made from high-priced, exotic materials, reducing the final cost to the customer.

Valves can be configured for 2-way normally closed, 2-way normally open and 3-way operation, with orifice sizes ranging from 0.032” to 0.156”. Additionally, BCF provides a selection of construction materials (PTFE, PEEK, PPS) and connection types (threaded ports or manifold mountable), allowing customisation for many different applications. BCF Isolation Valves’ actuation mechanism is rated up to 20 million cycles to ensure a long service life.
