Hanovia teams up with Hamworthy to provide IMO-compliant ballast water treatment systems
With ship owners worldwide contemplating the impending IMO Ballast Water Management Convention, UV disinfection specialist Hanovia has joined with fluid handling specialist Hamworthy to provide a robust new range of water treatment systems specifically designed to meet the IMO’s requirements.

Hanovia teams up with Hamworthy to provide IMO-compliant ballast water treatment systems
This partnership is the result of a strong relationship established between the two companies over many years working together on marine black and grey water systems. It combines Hanovia’s expertise in UV technology and Hamworthy’s experience in water filtration that meets environmental legislation, as well as its worldwide sales and support network. Combined, this provides ship owners with a flexible, cost-effective solution to their ballast water treatment needs.
Hanovia has been a leader in UV systems design and lamp manufacturing for over 80 years. It has an extensive track record in tailoring UV systems for a wide range of industries, including the marine sector, where UV is already becoming established as one of the leading chemical-free technologies for ballast water treatment. Medium Pressure UV is particularly advantageous due to its small footprint, ease of maintenance and low capital and running costs.
Hanovia is also one of the few UV system designers to make its own UV lamps and monitors, allowing the company maximum scope to optimise UV systems to suit specific ship requirements. UV performance is critically dependent on the combination of UV light source, UV monitoring technology and chamber fluid dynamics.
Apart from the need to perform to regulatory requirements under a wide range of seawater conditions, ship owners need treatment systems to have a small footprint and that lend themselves to both new-build and retro-fitting into what remaining space there is on existing ships.
Hanovia’s UV system is a key component in the ballast water management system and is integrated in the ballast water package by Hamworthy, which assumes overall responsibility for performance compliance against the required regulatory standards.
IMO approvals have progressed quickly and choosing a solution suitable to a range of differing ship types, sizes and environmental conditions can be challenging. The strategic alliance of Hanovia and Hamworthy provides a ballast water treatment solution that can assure ship owners of increased levels of protection for the marine environment anywhere in the world.
