Elfab awarded ISO 14001:2004 certification
Elfab has been awarded ISO 14001: 2004 certification of its environmental management system (EMS) by Lloyd’s Register. This standard helps companies identify, prioritise and manage their environmental risks as part of their normal business practice.
The initial focus of Elfab’s EMS was to reduce energy consumption at the company’s North Shields headquarters. The primary method of achieving this goal involved regular reading of gas and electricity meters to establish a pattern of energy usage. Daily meter monitoring enabled the company to quickly identify energy-draining activities and it was then able to take appropriate action to combat high consumption.
Timers have been fitted throughout the offices and meeting rooms, to ensure electricity is not wasted when these rooms are not in use, and temperature controls adjusted to suit the time of year. Additionally, shredding of waste office paper has been encouraged and all employees are instructed to turn their computers and monitors off when they are not in the office.
Suggestions on how additional environmental practices can be implemented are encouraged. Every employee is aware of the company’s environmental policy and has undergone extensive training on the advantages of becoming more environmentally aware.
