Aquionics Wins 2013 IUVA Product Innovation Award

Erlanger, Ky. (October 16, 2013) – Aquionics was presented with the 2013 International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA) Product Innovation Award for its PearlAqua UV-C LED water disinfection device. According to the IUVA, the biennial award recognizes an exemplary product or process involving UV applications.

Each nominated product or process is reviewed for innovation in design and engineering, and its impact on society. Judges consist of a committee of industry experts representing academia, regulators, manufacturers, users and design consultants.

Introduced in 2012, the PearlAqua is the world’s first water disinfection system to use UV-C LED lamps. This highly efficient technology allows instant full intensity on start-up and mercury-free water treatment with a fraction of the energy usage of conventional UV systems. The compact system can operate as a standalone unit or be easily integrated into OEM devices, ultrapure water generators, process water loops, medical sterilization equipment and many other point-of-use applications.

Aquionics Expands Manufacturing with New Location

Move allows increased production for new UV-Pearl UV-C LED disinfection system

Erlanger, Ky. (February 5, 2013) – To accommodate for its continued growth, UV disinfection specialist Aquionics has moved to a new location in Erlanger, Ky. The new facility is close to the international airport, and allows the company to complete more of its manufacturing in-house.

Aquionics’ new location provides increased manufacturing space for the company’s disinfection systems for municipal, industrial, aquatic and laboratory applications. There is a clean room to accommodate manufacture of the new UV-Pearl, the world’s first disinfection system to use UV-C LED technology. The new location also includes a new training center for customers to test equipment and learn proper operational procedures.

The company’s new address is 1455 Jamike Ave, Suite 100, Erlanger, Kentucky 41018. Its current phone number and website address will remain the same.

Mercury-Free Water Disinfection from Aquionics

UV-Pearl only device to offer UV-C LED technology for low power water treatment

Erlanger, Ky. (October 23, 2012) – Aquionics’ new UV-Pearl is the world’s first water disinfection system to use UV-C LED technology, allowing instant full intensity on start-up and mercury-free water treatment. The compact system can operate as a standalone unit or be easily integrated into OEM devices, ultrapure water generators, process water loops, medical sterilization equipment and many other point-of-use applications.

The UV-Pearl uses highly efficient UV LED lamps, which emit waves of light in the deep UV spectral (UV-C) range that destroy microorganisms on a cellular level. The LEDs can be tuned to different wavelengths from 240-280 nm, allowing targeting of specific pathogens. The Pearl is capable of producing a UV Dose of 60mJ/cm2 at a flow of 0.5 gpm (1.89 lpm) with only 50mW of optical power. These results were repeated at two independent laboratories using the Bacteriophage MS2 virus as a subject, and represent a significant improvement from UV-C LED research presented over the last decade.

UV-Pearl is capable of withstanding unlimited cycling without lamp degradation. The system is not affected by water temperature and can continue to operate with no flow.

Erlanger, Kentucky (October 5, 2011) – UV disinfection specialist Aquionics and LED expert Dot Metrics Technologies presented the results of their innovative UV LED based reactor design at the North American IUVA Conference (Toronto, ON). The results proved their UV LED disinfection system to be five times more efficient than conventional disinfection systems.

The results were obtained from studies conducted by University of North Carolina (Charlotte, N.C.) and University of Colorado (Boulder, Colo.). They show more than a 3 log reduction of E. coli at an optical power efficiency exceeding 10 gpm/ Watt. Conventional mercury based UV systems have yet to break the 2 gpm/ Watt peak performance level.

UV LEDs have proven effective in applications where UV disinfection was previously thought impossible. The process is mercury free, activated and deactivated in only nine nanoseconds, and operates using low voltage sources. Such benefits are a vast improvement over conventional disinfection methods, and make the new system prime for market adoption.

Aquionics and Dot Metrics Technologies anticipate the first in a series of products built around this new technology to be available in early 2012.

Aquionics and Dot Metrics Sign JDA to Combine Disinfection Technologies

Collaboration will produce unprecedented disinfection products

Erlanger, Kentucky (July 25, 2011) – UV disinfection specialist Aquionics has signed a Joint Development Agreement with LED expert Dot Metrics Technologies (Charlotte, N.C.) to develop a new line of UV-LED disinfection products. The agreement formalizes several months of working together to bring new disinfection systems to the market.

Dot Metrics is a small company associated with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. It focuses on UV LED systems development for disinfection of water, air and surfaces. For several years, Dot Metrics has been testing and discovering new applications for UV LEDs.

UV treatment of fluids is replacing traditional chemical treatment in many applications, however it still has a number of drawbacks. UV LEDs overcome almost all the problems associated with standard, mercury-based UV disinfection.

“The joint development effort between Dot Metrics and Aquionics is a great example of a successful collaboration. Dot Metrics brings innovative UV LED expertise and Aquionics contributes its experience and resources to rapidly commercialize the technology and provide access to key markets,” said Dot Metrics President and CEO, Rosanna Stokes. “In addition, access to technology from Aquionics’ sister companies within the water and photonics industries provides a strong basis for a long term relationship. The combined results of our efforts will provide a novel, small footprint, non-mercury based UV disinfection system in the market.”
