Aquionics UV Disinfection System Installed at 120-Year Old Brown Brothers Winery

Erlanger, Ky. (October 1, 2015) – To provide consistent, chemical-free disinfection of water for use in its winemaking processes, Brown Brothers winery (Victoria, Australia) installed an ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system from Aquionics.

Having built its reputation for quality wines over the last 120 years, Brown Brothers selected the Aquionics system based on its ability to deliver the most consistent and environmentally friendly disinfection available. Water passed through the system is exposed to UV light, destroying microorganisms on a cellular level, and making the water safe for use in bottle washing, process water, QC, laboratory water and anywhere else bio-safe water is required throughout the winery.

“Our system has worked perfectly since we installed it in 2009,” said Brown Brothers engineering manager, Steve Dows. “We routinely get a zero (bacterial) count after the UV.”

Besides eliminating bacteria, viruses, yeasts and molds, UV disinfection is also effective against harmful protozoa Cryptosporidium and Giardia, which are chlorine-resistant. The chemical free method has no effect on the water’s pH, color or taste, ensuring there is no impact on the quality, flavor or aroma of the wine.
