New UV Disinfection System For Industrial Process Water

Designed for process water disinfection in industries such as food, beverage and pharmaceutical manufacturing, Aquionics’ new AF3 amalgam* UV disinfection system offers a high microbial kill rate with low power consumption and low hydraulic pressure drop. Designed using CFD modeling tools, it is extremely flexible and can be installed either horizontally or vertically.

The AF3’s unique configuration produces an axial flow through an L-shaped, elongated treatment chamber, increasing residency time and improving disinfection performance. It can treat flow rates of up to 265 gallons/hour (50 m3/hour).

With a life of up to 16,000 hours, the system’s UV lamps produce up to three times the UV output of standard mercury low pressure lamps. A key feature of the lamps is their ability to operate at temperatures up to 104oF (40oC), compared to 64oF (18oC) for conventional low pressure lamps, without any significant loss of germicidal output and efficiency.

The AF3 also uses fewer UV lamps and less electrical power to generate a given UV output compared to conventional low pressure UV technology. Optimized for the delivery of drinking water disinfection doses, the germicidal performance of the AF3 is of the highest standard, satisfying international regulatory requirements.

To ensure the AF3 integrates simply and effectively with a variety of installation requirements, three levels of control are available, all with outputs linkable to building management or SCADA** systems. Combining a microprocessor-based control system with an “intelligent” electronic ballast, the system’s Electron controller provides a versatile combination of controls, alarms and clear indicators.

An optional UV monitor allows constant measurement of UV intensity delivered by the lamp, displayed on the Electron controller’s screen as a percentage. Intensity output can also be linked to the plant SCADA system.

A version of the AF3 built to cGMP*** requirements for pharmaceutical and sanitary applications is also available. Constructed using highly polished stainless steel with FDA**** approved seals, all welds are full penetration and ‘bug trap’ free. Tri-clamp connections also make it simple to disassemble and verify cleanliness.

Chilean Salmon Hatchery To Use UV To Disinfect Recirculation Water

Cultivos Huacamalal Ltda. of Chile is to install a medium pressure UV disinfection system for its new salmon hatchery in Rio Ignao in the south of the country. The UV system, which is being supplied by Aquionics’ British sister company, is part of a US$1.1 million water recirculation and effluent treatment system provided by Atlantech Chile Ltda. of Puerto Montt, Chile.

The UV unit will treat well water used for make-up supply in the water recirculation system to control against Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis (IPN) RNA-virus. IPN is found in wild salmon populations on the Pacific coasts of both North and South America and can cause severe mortality (up to 80%) in fish up to two years old. It is a common disease in hatcheries and is also capable of transmitting epizootic conditions back to wild populations.

UV treatment is ideally suited for this application as it uses no chemicals, avoiding the expense of complex monitoring systems needed when adding and removing chemicals in feedwater. In addition UV treatment does not alter the pH of the water or produce any harmful by-products in the discharged water.

The UV system to be installed at Rio Ignao features a manual wiper which prevents the build-up of deposits on the quartz tube, ensuring optimum UV dose at all times. A Photon control panel will provide the operators with data on flow rate, UV dose and intensity and can log up to one year’s performance data, which is downloadable to a PC via an RS323 port. The control panel can also be operated remotely, allowing the system to run 24 hours a day. Maintenance of the unit will be restricted to replacing the UV lamp once a year, a simple operation that can be carried out by on-site staff.

Chile is one of the three major salmon farming countries in the world, along with Norway and Scotland. In 2005, Chilean salmon exports were US$1.3 billion and it was expected to increase to US$2.2 billion by the end of 2006.
