Design overcomes limits of high flow rates to maximize speed and accuracy
Tucson, Arizona (August 23, 2016) – Alicat Scientific has engineered a new mass flow controller with its highest top flow rate suitable to a wider range of applications. The MCRH can accommodate flow rates of up to 5000 slpm, without compromising speed or precision of gas control. The highly stable controller manages industrial processes with more chaotic upstream fluctuations, such as control of industrial combustion gases, or mass flow into food and packaging processes.

The MCRH 5000 slpm precisely and rapidly controls mass flow rate, volumetric flow rate, or back pressure of gases in high flow processes. To overcome the poor turndown ratio and slow response of existing methods (such as interlinking a meter with an external valve) Alicat designed a new flow geometry. This new design accommodates the higher flow rates, with a low pressure drop of 14.1 psig at full scale. A dual valve design enables a fast 100 millisecond control response time without significantly raising instrument power requirements.
The instrument’s Gas Select firmware includes a library of up to 130 preloaded gases, user selectable in the field. The MCRH 5000 slpm can be programmed with the instrument’s push button menus and on-board display, or via remote connection. Digital communications options include RS-232 or RS-485 serial, Modbus, or PROFIBUS, as well as analog 0-5 Vdc, 1-5 Vdc, and 0-10 Vdc, or 4-20 mA.

Named a Halma plc ‘Company of the Year’ and recognized for international success

Compatible with Alicat’s latest Gas Select™ 6.0 firmware update
Tucson, Arizona (May 19, 2016) – Alicat Scientific has released updated LabVIEW instrument drivers for its line of standard mass flow meters, flow controllers, and pressure controllers running the company’s new Gas Select 6.0 Firmware.

Available for free download at http://www.alicat.com/support/software-drivers, the new device drivers enable users to easily develop control interfaces to Alicat instruments, without PLC programming skills. LabVIEW provides data collection from Alicat instruments, instrument control capabilities, and integration with other process instruments. Common functions include evaluating data in order to trigger events such as changes to set points or flow rates, gas selection, validation, and monitoring ongoing trend data.
With the industry’s highest turndown ratio, Alicat instruments precisely and rapidly control mass flow rate, volumetric flow rate and absolute pressure of gases. Specifically designed for original equipment manufacture and process integration, BASIS is Alicat’s smallest footprint instrument, providing fast, accurate control of gas flow rates in an economical, easy-to-integrate package. New user-selectable engineering units, better control and faster data with new control software
Tucson, Arizona (March 31, 2016) – Alicat Scientific has updated its Gas Select™ firmware for Alicat mass flow meters, mass flow controllers and pressure controllers. Gas Select 6.0 improves user control and data speed, adding features that enable users to make changes to instruments without a factory visit.

Gas Select firmware comes standard on all Alicat mass flow meters and controllers, and includes a library of up to 130 preloaded gases, referenced to NIST REFPROP 9. The firmware drives the flexible user interface for controlling instrument operation.
A new feature of version 6.0 is user-selectable engineering units. Units of pressure, temperature, volume, standard volume or mass can all be changed in the field. With this capability, flow instruments can be realigned to correlate with other calculations in the process stream, or even repurposed for new applications.
Also new with the update is the ability to enter real STP for operating conditions, rather than choosing from a few pre-loaded common standards. New flexibility to filter data line queries down to essential parameters results in faster, more frequent data updates. Setpoint input is now accepted either at the local panel or through the serial port, without first switching the input source. Both sources are active full time. The local panel is also easier to read, with the primary parameter that is displayed center screen now clearly labeled.
The new firmware is compatible with standard Alicat instruments—flow meters, flow controllers and pressure controllers—serial number 80,000 and higher. Gas Select 6.0 is installed on new instruments shipped after March 3rd, 2016. Existing units can be factory upgraded by request during annual recalibration.

Shanghai location reduces service turnaround time for Asia-Pacific customers
Tucson, Arizona (February 16, 2016) – Mass flow device manufacturer, Alicat Scientific, has established a new service center in Shanghai, China. Staffed by factory-trained service engineers, the new location gives customers in China and the Asia-Pacific region convenient access to Alicat factory services.

Maintenance and calibration is important to the operation and accuracy of all mass flow instruments. Andy Mangell joins Alicat to serve European distributors and customers
Tucson, Arizona (January 19, 2016) – Alicat Scientific (www.alicat.com) has improved customer experience in the European market, appointing Andy Mangell European Territory Manager.

Based in the United Kingdom, Mangell will serve as a local contact and source of support for distributors of Alicat’s line of pressure controllers, mass flow controllers, meters, and accessories. He will provide first line service support to local customers and channel partners, as well as work with OEM customers throughout Europe to incorporate Alicat’s flow control instruments into their products.
Mangell comes to Alicat with a strong background in the European market and mass flow technology. He has spent the last fifteen years as UK Managing Director of Bronkhorst UK, overseeing sales strategy for its Thermal and Coriolis mass flow controller lines. Prior to this, he spent nine years developing the UK market for pressure measurement and mechanical pressure regulator manufacturers. Mangell began his career working extensively across Europe, the Middle East and Africa in both the up-stream and down-stream oil and gas industries. He is a graduate of the University of Exeter (England) with a Combined Honors Degree in Geology and Geography.

Mass flow meters and controllers now available with Modbus-RTU communications protocol
Tucson, Arizona (March 27, 2014) – Alicat Scientific, Inc. now offers Modbus-RTU communications protocol as an option on all of its mass flow meters, mass flow controllers and pressure controllers. Modbus-RTU is an enduring industrial networking standard that allows communication among hundreds of devices on a single network.

Alicat’s new Modbus implementation brings the company’s signature laminar differential pressure-based measurement and 50-ms proportional control speeds to existing industrial Modbus-RTU networks. The Modbus protocol outputs all of the mass flow or pressure controller’s data, including: mass flow, volumetric flow, pressure, temperature, selected gas calibration, setpoint and totalized flow. Users may send commanded setpoints, gas selections and register changes to the Alicat meter or controller using a Modbus-enabled computer of PLC.
This Modbus offering may be paired with either Alicat’s standard multi-drop RS-232 connectivity or the optional RS-485 for greater data integrity over longer distances. Physical connector choices include 8-pin mini-DIN, 9-pin D-sub and 15-pin D-sub, which are available in a variety of pinout configurations for easy drop-in replacement of older industrial units. All Alicat instruments are backed by NIST-traceable calibration, comprehensive technical support and a lifetime warranty.
