Alicat Adds Industrial Automation Protocols to Vacuum Flow Control Instruments

Tucson, Arizona (March 22, 2017) – Alicat Scientific has expanded the communications protocol offerings on its line of mass flow controllers for vacuum coating applications, adding EtherNet/IP and DeviceNet. Alicat’s MCE-Series and MCV-Series mass flow controllers ensure the optimal coating environment in vacuum chambers, maintaining product integrity in vacuum deposition.

The new industrial automation protocols enable real time data–including mass flow, volumetric flow, absolute pressure and temperature, with full temperature and pressure compensation– to be read centrally by the PLC and used to manage the MCE- and MCV-Series instruments. Users may change setpoint or gas selection, and issue other commands to Alicat instruments using a DeviceNet or EtherNet/IP enabled PLC or computer.

Alicat Scientific a Preferred Supplier for VICI Air Pollution Analyzer Calibrators

Tucson, Arizona (March 15, 2017) – Alicat Scientific has been selected by analytical instrumentation manufacturer Valco Instruments Company Inc. (VICI) as one of its preferred suppliers for gas flow controls in its Dynacalibrator Calibration Gas Generators. Alicat’s range of BASIS OEM mass flow controllers provide the control required by VICI to create gas mixes down to fractions of a nanogram per minute, in a compact footprint for easy integration.

Designed specifically for original equipment manufacture and process integration, BASIS is Alicat’s smallest footprint instrument. It controls gas flow rates used for mixing or diluting, or supplied into processes—such as gas analyzers, custom blending manifolds, and burners. Introduced in 2015, BASIS has been qualified and accepted by customers within gas chromatography, gas mixing, and sputtering for film coating, as well as burner applications.

BASIS MFCs were selected by VICI as they provide the necessary control to create precise gas concentrations from high parts per million (PPM) to low parts per billion (PPB). VICI has incorporated multiple BASIS mass flow controllers into some of its Dynacalibrator line, which use Metronics permeation devices to provide a wide range of accurate calibration gases for air pollution and stack gas analyzers.

BASIS handles the mass flow rates needed by the Dynacalibrators to produce highly repeatable gas mixes over a wide range of flows. Having a small footprint, a high turndown ratio of 200:1, and a rapid response (100 milliseconds) aid the Dynacal products in achieving both accuracy and precision goals.

The BASIS line of mass flow controllers come in three flow ranges: 1-100 sccm, 5-1000 sccm, and 0.1-20 slpm. They can be configured with six selectable gases—Air, Ar, CO2, N2, O2, and N2O—or with He or H2.

Alicat Adds Backlit Monochrome Display to Mass Flow and Pressure Instruments

Tucson, Arizona (January 24, 2017) – Alicat Scientific has added backlighting as a standard feature on monochrome LCD displays for its core range of mass flow meters, mass flow controllers and pressure controllers. The backlighting illuminates Alicat’s full-information, menu-driven, multi-parameter LCD display screens for easy reading, regardless of lighting conditions.

Though reliable and dependable, with low power consumption needs, monochrome LCD screen crystals lack strong contrast, meaning these screens are best read in well-lit situations. With the new illuminated display, users can toggle the backlight on and off at the press of the button for easier reading and programming in darker environments.

The new feature now comes standard on most Alicat instruments with monochrome LCD displays. Illuminated Thin-film Transistor multi-color display and display-free instrument options remain available to suit customer preference.

With response times as low as 100 ms, Alicat controllers rapidly and precisely monitor and control critical process parameters in chemical, medical, manufacturing and power industries. Customized Electronic Pressure Controllers for OEM Use from Alicat Scientific

EPC family delivers responsive liquid or gas pressure control, tailored to application needs
Tucson, Arizona (December 7, 2016) – Alicat Scientific has added two new families of electronic pressure controllers specifically for high volume original equipment manufacture. The EPC family with single proportional valves, and EPCD family with dual valves, provide customized pressure control in embedded systems. The small footprint instruments respond quickly to upstream fluctuations to provide fast, accurate control of pressure in an economical, easy-to-integrate package. Alicat offers a choice of valves, valve orifices and process connections to fit customer specifications. EPC instruments are ideal for use in OEM gas chromatographs, fluidics dispensing for flow cytometry, and anywhere responsive pressure control is needed.

EPC and EPCD instruments have a 100 ms control response to still upstream pressure fluctuations in real time. NIST-traceable accuracy is 0.25% full-scale. The EPC family’s single proportional valve provides stable control of pressure in flowing applications, such as maintaining flow of carrier gas through the sample injection point in gas chromatographs. The EPCD features a second exhaust valve to provide efficient control of pressure in closed volumes, such as controlling the head space above a fluid for dispensing.

Alicat offers NPT, SAE, downport, and NeSSi process connections. Both digital (RS-232, RS-485, Modbus) and analog (0-5v, 0-10v, 4-20mA) communications are available to suit a range of end-user products. A choice in valve type and orifice allows for configuration to specific flow requirements for the best speed and stability.

The MCE can be used as a replacement of the legacy Type MKS 1179A Mass-Flo®, while the MCV replaces the discontinued Type MKS 2179A Mass-Flo®. The Alicat mass flow controllers operate on universal 12-30 VDC supply, and Alicat will match any pre-existing pin out on 9-pin or 15-pin D-sub connectors, for easy replacement. The units can be mounted in any orientation, even upside-down, without recalibration, further simplifying installations.

Pre-programmed with calibrations for 98 gases, the MCE and MCV measure mass flow, volumetric flow, absolute pressure and temperature, with full temperature and pressure compensation. Units may be programmed directly through the instrument keypad or remotely via RS-232 (RS-485 also available).

The MCE and MCV use patented laminar flow differential pressure (DP) technology found in many Alicat Scientific flow instruments, are supplied with NIST traceable certification, and carry the CE mark.

The MQ Series meters and MCQ Series mass flow controllers will operate in high pressure systems, up to 320 PSIA (22 bar). The new products ensure accurate and stable system performance, with 10 ms sensor response speeds and sub-100 ms control response times on the controllers.

The multivariate MQ Series meters and MCQ Series flow controllers measure mass flow rate, volumetric flow rates, and pressures. As a result, controllers can be set up for closed loop control of mass flow while also reporting pressure, or closed loop control of pressure while also reporting mass flow. Each instrument comes with a NIST-traceable calibration certificate demonstrating 2% of full scale accuracy.

Instruments come preloaded with up to 98 on-board gas calibrations. Alicat’s built-in COMPOSER™ gas mixing software can be used to compose up to twenty more custom blends using the standard gas list. Accuracy is virtually unaffected by change in gas type, and full-scale valve range is automatically recalibrated to maintain throughput ranges.

Alicat instruments provide multivariate interface displays, as well as data-rich serial and analog connections on every instrument, and can be used as either a stand-alone device or responsive integrated system component. Alicat Scientific Establishes European Office

UK location to provide engineering support, product service and user training
Cambridge, United Kingdom (September 1, 2016) – Mass flow device manufacturer, Alicat Scientific, has established a new regional office in Cambridge, United Kingdom. The new location gives customers across Europe local sales and service for Alicat’s line of pressure controllers, mass flow controllers, meters, and accessories.

The new office will be headed up by European Territory Manager, Andy Mangell. Mangell joined Alicat earlier this year, with a strong background in the European market and mass flow technology. Now that he has established a strong foundation in the region for application engineering support, calibration services, and end-user training, he is tasked with growing the localized support team and service capabilities.

New Mass Flow Controller from Alicat Performs at High Volumes

Design overcomes limits of high flow rates to maximize speed and accuracy
Tucson, Arizona (August 23, 2016) – Alicat Scientific has engineered a new mass flow controller with its highest top flow rate suitable to a wider range of applications. The MCRH can accommodate flow rates of up to 5000 slpm, without compromising speed or precision of gas control. The highly stable controller manages industrial processes with more chaotic upstream fluctuations, such as control of industrial combustion gases, or mass flow into food and packaging processes.

The MCRH 5000 slpm precisely and rapidly controls mass flow rate, volumetric flow rate, or back pressure of gases in high flow processes. To overcome the poor turndown ratio and slow response of existing methods (such as interlinking a meter with an external valve) Alicat designed a new flow geometry. This new design accommodates the higher flow rates, with a low pressure drop of 14.1 psig at full scale. A dual valve design enables a fast 100 millisecond control response time without significantly raising instrument power requirements.

The instrument’s Gas Select firmware includes a library of up to 130 preloaded gases, user selectable in the field. The MCRH 5000 slpm can be programmed with the instrument’s push button menus and on-board display, or via remote connection. Digital communications options include RS-232 or RS-485 serial, Modbus, or PROFIBUS, as well as analog 0-5 Vdc, 1-5 Vdc, and 0-10 Vdc, or 4-20 mA.
